Bought this Sunday, drove it home from Wales (after a very civilised cuppa at the services with Dave Astra - thanks for coming out mate!) - it's great to drive, nice and strong excelleration, smooth ride quality, comfy leather seat!

(sorry about that last 1, took 4 attempts at it, that was the best. David Bailey i aint!)

Right, the spec:

1.8 16v (possibly the C18XE - will check)
256mm Vented brakes
14" Alloys (do you rekon Max Power would be interested in a feature  )

Full, factory fitted black leather interior
Air Conditioning
4x Electric Windows

That's pretty much it.

Soon (very soon i hope) it'll be getting:

Mk4 SXi alloys (from my previous mk3 hatchback, they need a clean first tho!)
Sony HU/Focal 2way comps/Focal subs/Genesis amp from the hatchback aswell.
Ally door pins
MOMO Millenium Evo steering wheel
Chrome gear gaitor surround

Then, on my Christmas list is:
MOMO Race Evo Type S gear **** (ally finish)
MOMO Pit Stop Stell handbrake handle
MOMO Gand Prix pedals (in black)
Vectra chrome interior door handles
Colour coded exterior door handles
Braided brake lines
Clear/smoked repeaters

Then next year (hopefully before Billing) it'll get:
Koni adjustables
Some panels resprayed
Metal Monkey dials
Full LED conversion - but not blue
(I'll fit the carbon dial surround i've acquired at the same time)

Then sometime after that:
5 stud conversion
308mm brakes
Some form of 5stud Vaux alloys (Vectra Ph2 Gsi rims/5 stud versions of mine from a Zaf/What ever takes my fancy, and fits my budget at the time)

Oh, nearly forgot to tell you the truely rare thing about this car - the heater works on all 4 settings, the grill fits properly, and the rear heated screen works on all lines!

Will post up at the weekend when i've fitted them, my avater's a photoshop!

Are the fogs tinted ?

No, the passenger side 1 is broken, and it's just dark on the drivers side - they may be getting lightly tined tho - might hide some extra fogs behind the grill to make up for that.

No car that i can afford will ever be an investment - i certainly don't want this to be 1 anyway.

Making it an investment would mean keeping it original, and for me that's worse than driving a french car. I'll make it mine, make it better, but i doubt it'll ever be worth more.

:what a weird car, weird but nice, R reg phase 2, phase 2 mirrors, handles, headlamps, grille.

but phase 1 wings (going by the round side repeaters rather than the ovals on UK phase 2s) phase 1 non airbag wheel, phase 1 lack of boot panel.

and If I'm right, the leather isnt the same as UK spec CDX leather, no rear armrest, non sports front seats, etc.

but still looks very very ace

p.s. my astra musta been quite rare proper fitting grille, working HRW and all heater speeds, :o

Don't know yet - but they will be Vauxhall OE wheels of some description.

Possibly Vectra B GSi wheels, phase 1 or 2 - both nice wheels, and being 17's would fill the arches better. Cosmetic positive.

But they fitted 5stud versions of mine to the Zafira, so i could get them fairly inexpensively, and stay on 16's. Ride/Handling positive.

1 day i'll have a massive photoshop session and get pics of all the options.

So, the lip on the front bumper is annoying me, it's highly unlikely i'll ever fit any kind of splitter (standard GSi 1 is fugly) - so i'm thinking of having it removed.

Like this
http://www.mk3oc.com/forum/uploads/252/no-lip.jpg

What d'ya think? (ignore the red bit, it's something reflecting badly)

Also, short term plans are:
Fit speakers, dynamat doors (might have to wait and get other things done before the dynamat tho)
While doing that, fit chrome door handles (if i've got them in time) and ally door pins.
Take to shop to get amp installed and a clifford G5 650 (they'll do it with 4 window closure for £330, or £280 without - worth it?) - booked in for the end of the month.
Have Paul0 spray some colour coded doos handles, and then fit them.
Collect seat subframe while i'm up there and then fit that at some point.
Purchase a hub so i can fit my steering wheel (might have that as a xmas pressy, we'll see)

Then early next year i hope to get some new dials, interior LEDS and fit my carbon dial surround - definately gonna be unique (and hopefully it'll look good too!).

Little update, nothing really done, but plenty has been going on!

I've been buying a few bits over the last 3 weeks, got a front fog to replace the broken one, won a rear towing eye cover off ebay today - so that pretty much the exterior up to scratch (well, it will be when they're fitted)

I'm also buying some Vectra B bump strips, which will get colour coded at the same time as the towing eye cover and also the Vectra B door handles (mine has them already, but it's easier to colour code pre-painted ones so that what i've bought). Eventually i'll get the side repeater smoothed off and use the 1 that's integrated into the bump strips, but that'll have to wait.

This friday i'll be fitting my Focal front components, ally door pins and chrome gear gaitor surround, had hoped to have some chrome Vectra B interior door handles to fit at the same time, but i haven't been able to get any yet (i refuse to pay more than £20 delivered, which means i have to wait).

I also got a bargain from Halfords (i know, i was surprised too!) - got a mountney steering wheel boss for a tenner (marked down from an extortionate £55.99 - no wonder it was in the managers sale!). So i can fit my MOMO steering wheel aswell!

Talking of MOMO, i got another bargain on the pedals i wanted - they normaly got for £27+delivery on ebay, but i think i paid less than £20 delivered, and they're brand new!

This car will be living, driving proof that you a) don't need to spend a fortune to modify your car, and b) cars modified on a smaller budget don't have to look sh*t!

An area where i am spending the money is on the alarm, which is being fitted on saturday, along with the amp (i'm to lazy to do that myself!). And the car's going into the garage tomorrow for a service and general check up - i want a list of things that need attention, and for them to fix the problem causing the very poor consumption.

(well done for reading all that!)

We'll have to see what wheels are available when i go 5 stud, but that's likely to be a while away now. I'm not setting my heart on anything now because there'll be loads more on the market by then.

Had the car serviced today, also had them fit the new fog light (yes, i'm that lazy).

Cost £250!!! (all in, not just fitting the fog light!)

Found out that my high fuel consumption is likely due to a whole in the down pipe just before the lambda, so it thinks there's more air coming thru and is pumping in more fuel to compensate.

Also, apparently the whole system's in a bad way, due to dodgy welding all over the place. Probably need an entire new system from the manifold back.

Not good.

Also found out that the electrical problem it's having is most likely due to the indicator stalk wearing away. Which is good news as it should be a cheap and easy fix (although they quoted £70 to replace it, i think i'll manage that 1 myself!).

Apart from that the brake fliud needs replacing (will have them do that and fit my braided brake lines after i've fitted new discs+pads) and there are some issue with the o/s/f lower suspension arm. The outer CV boots are both cracking aswell, and the rear wheel bearing will need replacing sometime next year.

It's not mint yet - but it will be!

Have just replaced the indicator stalk (cheers Chas) and had the whole in the down pipe welded as a temporary measure.

So that should sort the 2 most annoying defects in the car.

Also had a Clifford G5 installed on Saturday, well most of it, it's gotta go back in next week to have a relay installed to hook it up to the central locking.

I'm going down to Bristol this weekend, will be the first long trip since i drove it home from Wales, should be a good test of the fuel consumption. Hopefully it's on the better side of 30mpg now.

Also looking into CarPC's as a future addition. I don't have an MFD, or even a TID, just a crappy looking digital clock - so a pop out 7" touch screen would go in there nicely.

Just trying to figure out whether to buy or build, the only thing that worries me is boot times and shutdowns - PC's don't like having the power cut all of a sudden.

kevseymour
9-1-2007, 12:42 AM
Well the alarm has finally been sorted - been in 3 times in total now!

They had to fit a solenoid to the drivers door for some reason, but at least it now works properly.

In other news, the front speakers still haven't been installed. I need the hole widening with a grinder - it's a different shape to the hole on the LS - well done vauxhall & opel!

I've also decided how I'm going to have my subs. Because they're tiny (5 inch) they'll fit on the parcel shelf. I'll just have to be creative with the box, as there's a metal bit about 2 inches below the shelf. In the interest of stealth i might have some of it cut out (it's not structural) so i can build down. Or i might leave that how it is an build up slightly. We'll see.

I've also finished acquiring all the bits that need painting now, so a trip to Paul0's PN Refinishing will be coming up.

And I've been offered a Laguna splitter for nothing, so I'm gonna see what that looks like.

Might have acquired some Bi Xenon HIDs too, we'll find out when i can get back on MIG - they're desperately needed, my headlights are shocking!

Drizz

They are the best wheel for any mk3 Astra, especially an iE!

Gawd - what is it with you lot and turbo rims?

its something that comes with age.. its like an understated class of modifying that some people just wont understand.... for starters they are the right size wheel.

very few wheels suit the astra gsi style/shape

I love the way people express opinion as fact

I don't like them, they look old and boring, and don't allow you to see the 308mm brake that will be the main reason for the swap.

The sooner people get over the fact turbo rims wont be going on my car, the sooner we can all be friends again, to all.

Im not saying its fact its my opinion as an enthusiast rather than a modifier.

Same as Drizz, he put 18's on the TS when he owned it we all said no dont do it!! but he was young and thats what he wanted, but i bet he wouldnt do that now if he got hold of another one.

I know what your all saying - you think the turbo rims would look great on the car - that's fine, that's an opinion and everyone's entitle to that.

But i disagree, passionatly, as you can tell. (Although i wasn't having the best of days when i wrote that - apologies.)

I don't disagree that 16's are great on the astra, if i did i'd probably be running 17's like alot of others. But there are better 16's.

Multispokes suite the astra very well i think, and the alloys i've choosen, In My Opinion, bring the car a bit more up-to-date. People who know vauxhalls can tell they're of the Mk4 SXi, to everyone else they're just alloys - which means the car is less likely to stand out. (this is a good thing). So when i do go 5-stud, i'll be looking for something similar to what i have now for every-day use, to maintain the drive quality and keep tyre costs down.

Which fits nicely with my plans for the car. Alot will be done to this car, but won't know it without looking closer.

Drizz
14-1-2007, 05:45 PM
16s are dearer then 15s/17s though in the tyre dept.

kevseymour
14-1-2007, 05:51 PM
cheaper than 18's tho!

kevseymour
14-1-2007, 05:54 PM
i just looked - Pirelli P Zero Nero - £50.60 in 195/45/16, £61.90 in 205/40/17.

Drizz
14-1-2007, 05:57 PM
Wow thats a first. Mid you i think more newer cars have 16s as STD then a few years ago so i suppose demand has increased hence cheaper pricing

kevseymour
14-1-2007, 06:08 PM
Yeah, the more demand there is for a tyre, the more they'll make and the cheaper they'll be.

It's mainly for the drive quality/looks balance tho, so when i do go 5 stud it'll be whatever i think looks best on the car from the available 16's - whilst trying to stay with non aftermarket alloys.

Vxlgsi
14-1-2007, 11:58 PM

Enough talk of tyres and alloys - on with the modifications!

Got my HIDs today, so i fitted the straight away!

http://www.mk3oc.com/forum/uploads/252/DSC00057 (Small).JPG

Photo's taken on my phone at dusk, so not great, but you get the idea!

Really easy to fit, hardest bit was figuring out where to put the balast for the drivers side, took the aribox apart to slide it down the side, then decided that was a stupid idea - clean out the crap from under the filter tho - so not a complete waste of time!

Vxlgsi

try driving a calibra then, even main beam is pittyfull.. HID's seem to take the strain off your eyes.

kevseymour
19-1-2007, 06:39 PM
Well, the HIDs are prooving to be an excellent addition to the car, the only thing that worries me is tha the main beam is stronger than the high beam!

I don't think these are BiXenon, Xenon and normal i think!

Ordered my new Alpine HU today aswell, will be picking it up (and fitting) on Monday, before the Vaux night at Ace Cafe.

Can't wait!

kevseymour
20-1-2007, 03:22 PM
Thanks Mike.

No i haven't, 5 spoke alloys are a little to plain for me, and Vaux don't really do anything special in that design either.

I think i'll stay with the multispoke style, maybe some Irmy Signas of something similar.

kevseymour
25-1-2007, 05:46 PM
Well, what a week i've been having!

Last friday i went to LM Car Audio in knebworth, i ordered an Alpine CDA 9854, expected to pick it up monday morning.

Monday and Tuesday cam and went, nothing had shown up. So Wednesday morning i got them to call Alpine to see what was going on.

It shipped Yesterday, they were told, so you should have it in your delivery today.

...did it show up? No!

So he phoned them again "oh, that'll be because we don't have any in stock mate, Alpine have discontinued it, and we don't want to get stock in if we wont be able to shift it"

B***ards! (Alpine, not LM) Why couldn't they have said that when he ordered the damn thing!

So, in light of that he offered me 2 deals:

Deal 1; An ex-deom 9812 - a great HU, got Time alingment, Bass Engine Plus - all the toy basicaly. But, it's blue illumination only (i want Red) and the fascia is silver (would prefer black).

He said he'd do it for the same price, so i mulled that 1 over.

Deal 2; £250 for the Eclipse (dunno what model, but there are only 3 for the UK and the cheapest is £300 online) That was about £150 off his normal sell price for that unit. BUT - it's alot more than i have to spend ATM. So i said no to that.

I was alomst going to agree to the 9812, dispite my concerns, then i phone Alpine customer services and talked to a very helpfull bloke, turns out the 9812 was released 4yrs ago! No way i thought, i want current technology, even if it means lesser spec.

He also said that they're doing a promotion for the official dealers on the 9856, and that it was worth asking for a price on that.

So i did, and i got it for the same i'd already paid for the lesser 9854!

Bargain! Picking it up tomorrow (hopefully!!!)

The only advisories were that the rear disc's are slightly scored (already bought replacement disc's/pads) and that the exhaust is blowing at a dodgy weld - stainless system is a possibility in the next month or so.

Ride height is getting sorted, ahead of schedule ;)

I'm not a fan of the original GSi splitter, playing with the idea of having that bottom lip removed completely.

Or maybe putting a laguna splitter on it.

Engine is a C18SEL - 130bhp apparently. Might test that on the roller at the VBOA spares day next weekend.

Provided i get the funding sorted (will hopefully have that tied up by the end of next week), this is what i want to come away with when all is finished:

Bodywork / Chassis

All necessary body work repairs
GSi front bumper without splitter and bottom lip smoothed off, fogs tinted
Ph1 tinted headlights (HIDs) / indicators
GSi grille – unsure whether to smooth it or not (hopefully only temporary, will be looking for a replacement original grille)
Smooth front wings
Wing mirror bases clolour coded
Vectra B colour coded rub strips (smoked side repeater included)
Vectra B delocked & colour coded door handles
Rear towing eye painted & fitted (at last!)
17” Irmscher Softstars – yes they do only come in 5 stud
308mm front brakes, calipers to be fully re-conditioned / painted
Koni top adjustable shocks / springs
Powder coated front legs – what colour?
Colour coded strut braces front & rear – does the hatch rear brace fit the saloon?

Engine

Replacement of all damaged parts, plus:
New CTS, Lambda sensors & thermostat
Cambelt
Water pump
Clutch
CV boots
Air conditioning up and running
Any more recommendations for things to change while the engine is out?

Cosmetic improvements

Cam cover colour coded
Rocker cover colour coded
Spark plug cover colour coded
Rad. fan housing colour coded
New washer fluid bottle
New brake fluid reservoir & servo cleaned up or replaced
New coolant tank
Exhaust manifold heat shield
Polished bolts where it’s worth it (rocker cover + wing bolts)
Polished slam spring
Polished bonnet spring / pin
Performance manifold, sports cat, SS cat back exhaust with 4” Oval
Induction kit – is it worth it and are engine bay temps going to be a problem?

Interior / ICE

Fit MOMO steering wheel
Red LED conversion
New dials & fit carbon dial surround
Fibreglass parcel shelf build for my 5” Subs (Focal 13 KS) and 5.25” components
Alpine EQ / Time alignment box of tricks

Obviously some of these things are more important that others - but it seems i've been given an opportunity here (yes, that is the sound of an eternal optimist!) and i've always wanted to do these things (well, not the crashing/repairing bit) - so i might aswell get on and do it!

Let me know your thoughts, if i've used some incorrect terminology please correct me, it's the only way i'll learn!

Yeah, soon - Billing is 7th/8th July, so what's that - 10 weeks? We'll have to see what the bodyshops can do for me though.

Oh i would've been keeping it either way - i would have moved it to my Mums garage (after having cleared it out of 20 years worth of accumulated crap!) and done little bits while i saved the money to get the major work done.

Don't need to do that now though!

Right well - i suppose i'd better do an update.

The cars been in the workshop for a couple of weeks now, and i've been down to drop off all the body parts (arms, legs, a torso or 2) that i'd been collecting.

Went thru exactly what's going to happen, and i'm very pleased with what we have planned.

Unfortunatly alot of the plans as detailed in the list i posted a while back will not be happeneing, mainly due to money constraints. I didn't get as much of a budget as i was hoping - but it's enough to get it back on the road.

Paul (the guy fixing it up 4 me, not Paul0 off here) has shown me all the damage i've done, and it's not that bad, tho the passenger side inner wing is about an inch to close to the other side of the car! That'll be getting pulled out on the jig soon.

I'm on the hunt for rads, and all the other bits that got smashed into a thousand tiny pieces from the engine bay - i went into Vauxhall (Knebworth) and the quoted me £400 for an aircon rad!!!! And that with trade club discount!

I don't know when it'll be finished, but whilst i can't wait to have it back - i'm in no real rush.

Sorry, i don't have any new photo's either, but it doesn't look alot different to the last lot.

In all honesty - i can't see anything wrong with thte grille mate, but people PLEASE;

Don't pick out faults with it yet - gimme a couple of days to go round it finding them myself.

Pauls work is top notch, he's done wonders with the front bumper - it had obviously been in quite a shunt and needed some work to get it to sit right.

I'm well happy.

Oh God, here we go again!

No Turbo wheels! Ever!

Lowering will happen though, hopefully soon.

Maybe sooner if the knocks and bangs i keep hearing are suspension related!

(probably just something boring like bearing or top mounts or whatever tho)

Just booked it in to have it checked over mechanically, the EML came on last night, after the engine cut out at 70, in the wet (extremely wet!!), when i was between 2 lorries!

It went off when i started it again after stopping at the pub for an hour or so, but then it came on again this morning on the way to work.

Need tghat sorted this week thoug - taking the car on holiday next week!

(oh yeah, and there's ther small matter of Billing too, if it's still on!)

Thank-you! It got quite alot of attention actually - many people walked straight passed without giving it a second thought, but enough people took an interest, especially when they saw the boot.

Well, to remedy the engine issues I'm having (awful wiring loom, engine cutting out, strange noises, the fact it's an XEV and not the right engine anyway!), it's been decided that it'll be getting an XE.

I have a plan, and provided nothing happens that would derail that, it could be done in September.

I'll also be calling on Drizz's talents to sort out the rear hubs, ARB drop links, steering arm and 1 of the lower arms next month - asap after pay day.
