check you've got no signs of head gasket failure.

Do a basic thermostat check. Feel the top hose to the rad. This pipe should stay cold as the rest of the system warms up. As the thermostat opens you'll feel the top hose and the rad suddenly get hot. This is a good indication that the thermostat is working. If all the system warms up at the same rate or the top hose/radiator never get warm you've got a thermostat problem.

I'd try draining the water and flushing the system as best you can. Sounds like theres some sort of restriction to me?, have you ever put rad weld in it?

when mine was bubble'ing in the header tank it was because the rad was blocked, might be worth checking that your rad isnt blocked ;)
