Just looking on eBay and came across this engine,

The guy claims the following ''I have a print out from courtney sport of 169.9 bhp, therefore the engine is very strong and from as far as i know unmodified.''

If he does have this print out for real, then it's clearly not a standard engine....

I see so many redtops on ebay claiming 170+ bhp from standard engines usually in nova's...... just makes me laugh.

im no redtop expert but if i remeber way back did nt the mk2 gte 16v come with 156 bhp ? so maybe with a powercap 159 - 160 if lucky

Yes the astra gte was the early type so came with de-cat which was 156, the later ones where 147 in the calibra's.

I had a power-sap and it was poo, get a big flat spot at 5k for around 900rpm then hard acceleration but still pants..

Adz your probably more right than you know. I went to an RR day at Courtenay the week after my XE conversion and got 160bph on a standard engine. A few others got the same kind of result, about 10bhp more than expected.

I want to believe their old rollers were accurate, but the cynic in me reckons they upgraded recently for a reason...
