Hi,
This question is actually about my mk4 astra rather than my mk3 but just want to know if anyone can give me some info on this. As the question states above, can you do a straight swap of a 1.6 engine into a 1.4 astra, as if you were fitting the car with another 1.4 engine, i.e are all the fittings etc in the same place or would it require additional parts or modifications? My car is a 1999 mk4 astra 1.4 16v x14xe, im not sure of the engine code of the 1.6 but I do know that its coming out of a 2000 mk4 astra that was crashed. With regards to the ecu is it possible to do a straight swap from the 2000 astra to the 1999, also i have the original security code off the 99 astra aswel as op-com so if a straight swap wouldnt work could the ecu in the 99 be reset with op-com and somehow reprogramed for the 1.6 engine?? Sorry i know thats a lot of questions at once, thanks for your help in advance

Its deffo possible mate is it a 1.6 16v engine plus the loom 4 it should be the same have you looked at it compared the 2 looms round the engine bay i:e connecters/injectors etc. As for your ecu id use the 1.6 1 as the 1.4 has less bhp its up 2 you though mate possible be a change ov chip in the ecu or re-programed costly though. hope this has helped;)

plus mate everthing else is the same i:e brakes/suspension/ almost forgot am you having the gearbox aswell?

Hi, thanks for your reply, deffo helped, are you saying the brakes and suspension are the same yes? Im going to be getting the whole car so it would probably be easiest to just keep the same gearbox as is already fitted to the 1.6 engine, again im not sure if its a 16v or 8v, also I can take the wiring loom from the 1.6 and put it in the 1.4 if needs be, hopefully they will be the same though, so do you reckon besides changing the ecu and wiring loom it should be more or less the same as swapping for another 1.4 engine??

Yes mate if your havin the engine no point in changing the gearboxes over just be pointless really leave it on the 1.6 plus it has more torque. you can deffo swap the looms mate bit ov a job though and as for the swap mate its worth it if its the 1.6 16v as these are 100bhp(98bhp) same engine as mine really ive ad 125mph out of mine thts without my filter and bkbox on

ow almost forgot yours is 74bhp at the mo so you will gain a good 25bhp it dont sound much but it makes difference

Not sure to be honest, it was out of my area of expertise so i took it to a mechanic i know, he thought it was just the coil pack first but it wasnt, did a compression test and compression was way lower in 3 of the cylinders than it was supposed to be, he said the whole thing would have to be reconditioned and it would cost about 700eur so instead I got the 1.6 myself today, car was crashed in the front, engine is perfect though and it came with lexus lights, alloys, r/c/l and leccy windows, all of which are going on my current 1.4  only cost me 250eur which is very good as Ireland prices go. Im gona attempt the engine change myself with a little help and hope for the best

Nice the lights and alloys problee worth abit so you got a good bargain there mate and the engine shouldent be too much of a job as long as you got the rite equipment to do it take your time dont rush it rushing makes mistakes ( ive been there and done it) let me now how you get on im ere just pm me if any probz;)

Sound lad, got the 1.6 out today without too many problems, the 1.4 comes out tommorow, then the 1.6 goes in, I think i'll be fairly flat out for the day, i'll let you know how it turns out, hopefully i'll once again have a fully working car by tommorow night!

Should do mate still got a fairbit to do then by the sounds of it is it the 16v valve then?
