i need help with my m8s car he has a corsa b envoy 1.0! not sure if anyone is familiar with it on this site but its better then mvoc.co.uk for advice! it got fitted with a brand new clutch kit he hasnt drove it on the road before and isnt sure about the reverse! i was playing around with the clutch cable and i adjusted it so the clutch pedal sits slightly higher than the brake pedal! i was wondering wat is the yellow screw thing that comes out the gearbox? and would the level of the gearbox oil make it hard to find reverse? as its only been able to go into reverse once out of the hundred times we have tried lol any advice would be grateful cheers

sounds like you need to re adjust the cable mate

i would check the rubber bushings on your m8s gear linkage cus i had trouble with rev on my astra then the only gears i could use was 3rd n 4th because the bushing snaped on the gear linkage so would check that out to c if its on its way out

The interesting thing is, reverse is the only gear that doesnt use a synchro. If it wont go in, it sounds like the clutch is not disengageing correctly. This could be becasue of a bad set up clutch cable of a badly set up linkage. One thing I have heard of is at the gear stick itself. If you lift the gaitor on the gear stick, make sure that everything under here is solid, and nothing is loose. How does the stick feel in other gears, or rather, when it is in nuetral, does it flop around a bit or is it quite firm ?

Pah lol who need reverse  i know someone who biult a calibra turbo nova and had 6 speed box. Cos of this reverse was a big fat no no  you to make a trip to the shops interesting!

when i had problems with selecting gears on mine it started off as reverse and 1st i couldnt get.
i'd have a look under your gaiter at where the gearstick fits into the linkage, thats what it was with mine.
where the stick fits into the linkage there is a rubber ring, and either that or where it fits in was worn, because it was loose and wasnt turning the linkage properly/far enough.

all i did was pull the stick and linkage out of another Astra at the scrappy and replace mine and now its perfect.

oh and when you have the gaiter lifted try selecting reverse, but push the linkage at the base of the stick across too, if it goes straight in then you have found your problem

its quite firm i fink.... if it is quite loose how would i i make it more firm? take it all out and put it all back in properly?

are the rubber bushings located more towards the clutch cable? like under the bonnet?

is the linkage your talking about lower than where the stick sorta turns into a ball like figure?

no that point is where i mean, theres like a rubber ring around that ball at the end of the gear stick, not sure whether it was the rubber or the hole it sits that was knackered, but thats where my problems were coming from.

lift up the gaiter and try to put the car in reverse, as you do this, push the linkage across at the point the stick sits in the linkage and see if it goes into reverse any easier..
the stick itself can only go in one place because it has a guide for reverse, but if its not turning the linkage properly because of a worn joint you will have problems moving it forward to actually select reverse

i got it into reverse but i was playing around with the screwthing just to the left of the clutch cable! i pushed it in its like this screw thing with a spring that goes into the gearbox i pushed it in and it made it hard to put it into any gear then it crunched into reverse! does this mean anyfing? there is a pic on this site its 2nd pic down as i cant post a picture up on here

thats for when you want to align the gears (following haynes) you have to disconnect the selector, pull that out and twist the bit the selector goes onto until you can fit a 4.5mm drill bit in the hole, once you have done that, you reconnect the selector so that it sits in the right place inside, tighten it up, remove the drill bit and then replace the screwbit your remove with a NEW one!

so wat did i do wen i pushed in that screw thing and locked it in....thats the only time ive been able to get the car into reverse....wat does this mean? wat wud i have to do?

That screw thing does the same job as the drill bit, it locks the selector in position when you correctly align the linkage.

so basically if i push that screw in and do this drill 4.5mm and that it all should be corrected and reverse shud be found agen?

you sorted your prob mate
nah not yet havent had the time to get properly around to doing it! just tryina build up information then wen i got free time il do it all! lol im guessing basically i gotta get the linkage in line correctly cos that screw (with spring around it) is quite far out comparing it to other pics of corsa engine bays ive seen and down the scrappy ive seen

Yes mate thats how to do it

you dont need to take that plug out just push it in is wat i did when i put my short shift gear linkage in if you loosen the linkage and push in the plug so that the gear box holds it in on its own hold the gear stick towards the first gear and second gear pane and then tighten the bolts to the gear linkage you will need a second pair of hands to hold the gear stick tho hope this has helped
