Cesaro Restoration

Forgot to ask have you any pics of your car?? Be nice to see what condition your own is in..... I am hoping to have a look again on friday and hope to take some pics

Most body shops wont take on resprays anymore or if they do they charge the earth and take there time doing it. They make more money and quicker cash flow doing the smaller jobs. My car spent the best part of 2 1/2 years at a body shop which I ended up loosing money and pulling the job unfinished. Ended up doing all the bodywork myself and just taking it to a spray booth to get primered/painted. I lost allot of faith in other people doing jobs for me after that and now I'm spraying parts myself with very good results. I even get people asking me to spray things for them which is the downside.
Think about removing rubbers, lights, handles etc which will save time and money and you will get a better finish. Are you planning on priming the whole car or going straight over the old paint with colour? The p1200 you used to sand the car will not be sufficient for the paint to stick. If you are priming the whole car, sand with a long flat block p320. If your going straight for colour sand with p600- p800. The more you can do the more money you can save and the quicker they will have your car in the booth. About 80% of the work load is in the preparation not the spraying.
My Car left like this

I started again myself, removed paint in area's where I could, new panels welded in and everything in p320

back to body shop for primer, once back home sanded primer p320, p600,p800

Back to the body shop for paint. which i did all the masking and panel wiping and tacking prior to paint being applied.

Sounds like you took the correct steps apart from going to far in your grit stages before paint. Go back over the whole car in 600 - 800 grit before paint and grey scotch in door shuts/tight areas. 2000 is used to knock down orange peel after paint not as a key before paint. For best results Leave the car for 4-6 weeks after painting to allow your paint to Gas out and harden up, then go in with a 1500 and 2000 or even up to 6000 and rotary polish it.
Don't use celly paint its dated, you can get all your paint from Spray guns direct delivered to your door. Advise going basecoat clearcoat rather than direct gloss/single stage, They do standox solvent basecoat at £40.80 a litre and your probably need around 2-3 litres depending on coverage. Basecoat mixed with thinner 2:1 at 2litres will give up 3litres mixed. They do Some very good High solids clears/lacquers as well which I refuse to use anything else.

Looks great mate. You can get good results without a booth,i've sprayed 3 bumpers, bonnet, grill and spoiler in my gazebo for our zafira's this year and they come out great. You will still get dirt nibs in a booth, just far less than you get without one.I use a tungsten block to take the top off the dirt and sand 1500/2000 and its gone. The finish is down to the person that is spraying it.The lacquer is like a giant run across the panel the wetter you can get it the better finish, but to much in one area it will run and to little and you get dry spray. If you want a deep shine go hs clear, thicker film build.DSC00561 (1).JPG

Great to hear the cars finally getting sorted just a pain you got messed about.

on cold start the cam followers well one or two are noisy, I have read inn the Haynes manual that they don't really wear? Is it worth getting a new set and can you get away with just removing the cams and no need to remove the head?

I'd recommend you strip your existing lifters and give them a good clean and oil. You can just remove your cam and pull the lifters out using a strong magnet. I serviced all 24 when I was building my wifes V6 with all details you need here in the build diary to same spamming your thread with my pictures. If your not confidant doing them yourself I'm happy to assist should you need it as I'm only a few miles away as I do love my car tinkering.

I did think about a re-shell on the car but I wanted to keep the originality of the car. I have read on other forums about this and when its been re-shelled it takes value of the car. I know this has mainly been aimed at the escort and chevette HS world, but I think it should apply to all. In time I think it will come to the mk3 world. Time will tell.

Well an up-date on the cesaro, the garage I tool it too would not MOT the car after doing all the welding? I was surprised at this as they do MOT, so when they didnt want to do anymore work to the car I picked it up and took it straight for an MOT and guess what failed on the welding! I have now taken it to the respray shop and he is ripping all there work of and starting again. Also found on the MOT someone had crushed the brake pipes! I wonder why someone would do that! The guy doing the respray said its been rubbed down really well and just new sills and archs glass out and then in the oven. I hope to get to the VBOA this year in it.

hope you didnt pay the original place if so id be asking for my money back

I put a complaint in and asking for my money back. They are part of a quality code garage scheme so I have contacted them. All I asked for was an MOT and welding to that standard. The guy who is doing it now said the work is shocking, people I work with have had work done before and said he is top quality.

Been a while since I posted some pics

The car is looking superb straight out the gun.

Are you willing to let us know the company details who have been the saving grace and sorted out the mess that was left by the previous cowboys? It's always worth knowing about good body restorers are they are rare to find ones you can actually trust when not attempting it yourself.

Hi, yes it is the body shop in hucknall, Dan runs it and he has done wonders. Beings the engine and box were out they are being stripped and rebuilt. Also the brakes have been stripped by biggred.

looks lovely now

Thanks, appreciate it, Dan is the wizard with the gun. The engine is at Mansfield engine centre and they are down to earth and go through the cost after they have stripped with an initial price prior to stripping it. It is having new pistons and re-bore as the bores were on top limit, parts coming from Belgium, and the gearbox is being done at Basford intagear.
