Is it poss or a lot easier to with whole shaft out? If so might as well get new shaft instead? Done 120K miles.
Boot was split for some time I reckon. Some clicking on full lock but inconsistently. Passed recent MoT but read horror stories re wheels coming off etc! So is it really a safety issue?

you need to change it mate, its alot easyer to change the cv joint when the drive shaft is off the car.theres no need to get a new drive shaft just replace the joint, unless you have a full one with cv joints etc lying complete

your wheel wont come off but a shaft coming apart whilst driving is never a good thing you will loose all drive and could do further damage with bits of it flying off. It is possible to do it with the box end of the shaft in place but it is easier with it out. Personally id leave it in as oil from vaux is 7quid. And dont worry about the age of the shaft too much unless you can see damage id just change the joint

If the cv joint breaks up you will not loose your wheel but will loose the drive of the vehicle.

Changing the joint with the shaft in situ is a doodle and much easier than draining and replacing the gearbox oil. All you need to undo is the bottom ball joint and hub nut and your on your way to success.
