I've inherited a 1998 MK3 Astra 1.6. I changed the head gasket 2020 and have just started using it daily. It's just turned 70k on the original clutch and i was just wondering IF the clutch ever starts to go, how difficult it is to replace.

I thought on all mk3's you could change the clutch without taking out the gearbox, but I now know this isn't the case. I understand mine has the X16SZR engine. How can i tell if it's an easy version or hard version?

If I've got the hard one, dropping the subframe doesn't sound that feasible on a driveway working on your own. Anyone have any experience of doing the job?

Erm i think it may only be the f18 and f20 that had the sliding input shaft. Youll know if it is possible because your gearbox will have an inspection hatch as half of the bell housing.

If not, it will be subframe off, its a pain, but it's do able, you just need a hand gettin it back in. or use a trolley jack if you have skills
