Dave b's VXR Powered Gsi Diary

cheers guys, need to tighten the bumper, bloody thing is ratting, its annoying haha, got a list of things to do, i am busy still driving it, its dry and they havent gritted the roads yet!

Hey! I see that you have wind deflectors on your GSi. Was wondering if they are worth it?

I guess your car doesn't have A/C as well, is that why you use them? And if yes, do they allow more fresh air on the highway or not really?

Any cons of having them?

I am getting myself a GSi again in the spring and can't make up my mind if I should source these deflectors out or not.

Wind deflectors on any car just work, yes little more wind noise but you can have the window open a little get more air and even in the rain you dont get wet. Just get them

Time to get this on the road! always ends up so late in the year, should get my act together earlier, but this year i'll use having a baby as an excuse lol

so things to try and do for this year include gettin the windscreen washers working, which never have since I did the rebuild. As well as a bit of a tidy up.

So started at the washers. My plan is to use the original headlight washer bottle in the wheel arch to feed the windscreen washers. Keep it out the bay which I don't have room for anymore because of the engine bay loom connector.

So I started looking at the washer bottle and found the wash pump was seized solid. The original washer pump is mega bucks so I decided to come up with a cheaper solution. This is from a ford transit or something lol, a tenner

full

So I did a little trial 3d print , the ring in the middle to try and make the pump the same size as the fat original pump.

No plug for this so the easier option is to 'pot' the motor and run a plug off the lead of whatever choice I choose!

So I did a full size 3d print sleeve

Wait for that to dry.

Next, I noticed a while back there was a hole in the paint in the wheel arch, turns out the pain had come away from the arch underneath. Kinda annoying as I just painted over the stuff that was already there, but it needs addressing! So took a finger nail to it and peeled it back to see what I could pull of by hand, quite alot it turns out!

So I wire wheeled it untill it was just rubbing off rather than flaking so I know it's bonded to the car ok and primered.

Also, never thought of checking the pollen filter after the fire..... melty...

Started stripping the loom back to reroute the wiring

This proved very tough as it is very melted..... more to come!

Photo-0153.jpg

well pleased with her
totally standard spec apart form alloys, stainless 4 branch and sports cat
which is a result

bad points...

-typical rust-archs.wiper motor, rear lights n slite on front arch but nothin major
-looks like someone has tried breaking into it as it has a dent like a screw driver under the drivers door handle
-need serious tlc n some sprayin done but family friends has a spray shop n he is **** hot so all in good time

apart from that nothin my thousands of pound worth of parts n my garage won't solve

will be proper mint mechanical wise in couple of months then will just need to go in the body shop wen i got the money

other thing to ad white haven has some seriously nice mountainous roads...
Photo-0151.jpg

and 135mph on the m6 toll road with a cat on it

that will be comin straight off on tue at work lol

well i ahev had very non stop weekend at work, been at the garage all weekend fitting loads of stuff...

heat wrapped 4 branch manifold
koni adjustables with 40mm drop all round
wishbones
driveshaftes
track rod end
top mounts
anti roll bar links

was a complete mission in all taking me about 11 hours lol god i hate rust

the car is now not goin to be touch untill after rr day as i now i will just break it! after that will be...

drilled n groved n ebc pads all round n braided hoses

all fun!
This is a really cool car, I have had my astra atlas e-drive for 20 years and after 34 months in storage she was finally brought out of retirement and moved 50 miles on a transport trailer to the body shop that worked on my astra LS hi-torq last year! I can't wait to get my pride and joy back on the road again! It's amazing how an MOT failure on the Ls-hi-torq which I have only owned for three years finally made me see sense!

It's definitely does! I think the only things that aren't braided is the stuff where it is impossible to do it , like this bit on the bulkhead lol

What I would like is a heat shrink label maker lol

Same! Proper ones are mega expensive even used!

Just a small update, this thing is super close to being back on the road

removed the fire-melted pollen filter and exchanged for a carbon filter style pollen filter, be good to see if it makes a difference. It's only made by comline, but worth a shot, see if it keeps some smells out.

Washer bottle bracket, the unseal had kept the zinc coating pretty mint underneath, just needed a clean up.

bottle is all in, also joined the wiring to the oem stuff and put a plug on it and ran it under the scuttle and refitted the scuttle, forgot to take a picture of that lol

Rear arach got its final coat, 2k paint but just brushed it on as it's an arch, apart from being a bit more shiney you would never know I had carried out a repair in there though so really happy with that.

Finally just got the brake fluid res level sensor plug to replace cause it's also charred. This is gettin closer to the all the burnt stuff being sorted, it's still a bit of a mess underneath, i'll attack it at some point with the asotone.

full

Also who car needs a good polish.... when I sprayed the car i ceramic coated it after, it ruined the finish of the car though and left streaks in the reflection etc so i'm gonna polish that off and go for the same sealer I used on the megane ( merenza or something it's called )

More to come!

I also have a brand new brake fluid resiviour to fit as the current one is black and charred too, but I need to order some new front caliper hoses ( as the current ones are too long ) so i'll wait untill then and brake the system and go for all new fluid as will be needed.

So i've got a local car show tomorrow! Started giving it a quick wash, but it seems this might be the time to prep the car for the vboa!
So i took the boost pipes off and polished them, threw some quick detailer round the rest. Still looking fresh!

I'm gonna be changing the brake fluid resivour in winter as I want some new shorter from flexy hoses aswell. The brake pedal is awesome currently so don't want to **** around with it while I don't have to!
I also had a quick go at cleaning the bonnet, haven't bothered trying to do it since the fire as the paint is missing in the middle, but as you can see in this picture, I cleaned the left and it actually looks pretty good! Did the otherside and actually look pretty good! Will repray that in winter too!

show pictures to follow!

Looking good dave great to see it back out on the road

So VBOA 2024 is done! Fitted a new stereo to the astra as my phone no longer has a headphone jack slot, so I got anothe pioneer with bluetooth. Loads better!

Cracking weekend and the 1st one for my missis, she loved it.

annoyingly just as I went to leave on friday to go to the vboa, an ABS light came on, and stayed on all weekend! So when I got home, I did the paper clip test

full

full

Came up with code 19, solenoid relay supply fault.

I had a quick look and fuse was ok, all the wiring looked ok, need to try and remove these relays in the top and check them, more investigation required!

Still looking super fresh Dave

New headunit looks nice, still looks reasonably retro too.

Amazing how much minor damage the fire/extiguisher is still showing up now though! You'll get through it all eventually at least lol.
