Hello all, as this is my first post i would jsut like to say hello to everyone :)

The problem I'm having is that when ever i start my astra arctic II there is a large rattle and it rattles when im driving in the lower revs

What could it possibly be? Its not the cat because i had the cat and lamba replaced for the mot a month ago

Driving me nuts and will it cause any damage to the car?

Any help is appreciated

Hi and welcome to the forums!

Have you checked the exhaust rubbers as to what condition the'yre in? Over time they will stretch and they do not have enough strenghth to hold the exhaust up. Also i would suggest checking all the bolts and nuts are tight. Its possible to get underneath the car and grab hold of the exhaust pipe (DONT touch the exhaust when its just been driven) and then wobble it to see where its too loose (just a thought, thats what i had to do with a car once).

Hope this has helped.

Thanks a lot, i'll have a look

Have been reading that it could possibly be the heat shield on the manifold or something ?

ill have to agree with this one..... it gets HOT :sad:

mines hitting the spare wheel well when its cold, when it gets warm its stops lol, hope you find it.

alot of astras have the issue of the rear silencer vibrating due to worn rubbers... it may be that the rear box is rattling against the spare wheel housing... when it`s cool give it a good old shake from left to right and up and down and gauge how much play there is. if it is the rubber hanger mounts, you can replace with poly ones as they are infinitely more durable... good luck.

it could be that the baffles have collapsed within the back box, and these can rattle around. if its got an el-cheapo exhaust on it (bosal, walkers etc) they tend to rot out after a year or so due to all the moisture in the exhaust gasses. shake the box and if it sounds like a jar or coins you know what it is ;)

Oh I know this one oh so well, mine is so bad it bangs off the rear chassis leg when going round a round-a-bout its really quite annoying!!

the hangers on the cat is supported with cable ties (so suggests that its known theyre knackered!!)

I would also like to say that I also suffered the same rattle, I ended up taking the heat shield off the manifold (which is also when I learned Exhaust = HOT ) I used wire cutters to snip it round the joins and it come off quite easily.

mine rattles to but it's the heat shield above the cat just another idea for you mate
