Hi first post so hi to all

i have a grinding noise coming from either steering pump or air con pump on my 97p1.6 8v sounds like a disc cutter is in the engine bay :) , which is more likely to go as its raining and i cant even start to look at it

, i have got to change w/pump and tbelt aswell , what do i have to do to remove aircon pump if its that thats gone as i will do it all in one go

If the pump is needing de-gassing prior to removal, then legally it has to be recovered into a bottle by air con place or garage etc.
I would try to determine exactly what is at fault first, when you take the belt off, you will most likely feel the roughness in the water pump air con pump etc, does it do it all the time if it does likely to be the water pump as very weak on these engines, air con pump freewheels unless switched on, so if onlt when it is on it's the air con pump.

Remove the auxillary belt then if it stops you know you have a fault on that side. Does moving the steering side to side alter the sound/ pitch again turning aircon on does this have any effect? It could be a roller or tensioner faulty. Simple diagnostics will help you save any unwanted bills. J

Hi ive had a look and its the aircon pump ,

the aircon does not work so i guess its jammed

but to stop noise all i did was move outside bit of aircon pump round a bit , the bit that does not move when disengaged

when i remove pump i guess i need a shorter belt and it goes thro engine mount which i need to remove ,

................ as jampot said remove the alternor belt then start it. if the noise has gone, you have a bearing gone on you auxilery. just need to all ancileries and check for play. if the noise is still there, most likely to be either a tensioner, pully, or water pump behind cambelt cover
