Just finished some major work on my car re-spraying both rear-quarters and filling some bad dints just to find that the arches are like foil and rotting through from the inside (inner arches are fine), looks like water has gone inbetween the skins and killed them inside out :(

anyway,
Basically I would like peoples advise and pics if possible on repairs to the rear arches. I'm going to be using the repair kits avaliable and wont be putting complete rear-quarters on the car and would espacially like to know how to avoid the arches cracking where the metals meet (build up, seem weld and then grind back flat???). I've got a good idear and have done a fair amount of body work before and done plenty to the car already (i'm not happy unless i've got a grinder in one hand and a hammer in the other!), just affraid that the paint work will crack!

Thanks!

hi mate, i had my rear quarter repaired, did it myself, basically i bought a panel from beaverbrooks, think it was about £15, then cut it down to the size i needed and cut out the rused part, i also had to get the filler panel too and cut that out, then seam welded them in and grinded them back flat, then a thin layer of filler and the bodyshop i was doing it at sanded the last bit to get imperfections out. heres some pics, bear in mind i had the sills done same time so may look abit messy :)

once it was filled we covered the arch in underseal so it wouldnt rot until it was sprayed

Thats the repair section i've seen... guess i'll just have a go and see what results take form (be in the summer now though). The one thing i'm worried about is the filler cracking around where the new metal is.. not had any problems with cracking i take it then?

Cheers for the reply!

got a slight crack above the filler panel, but im not too bothered about that to how bad it was before. but it was just spot welded there i think, the rest was seam welded then grinded back and not one crack

if you are worried about cracking you could always get a complete rear arch but they do cost abit

Hi Jay just a few questions:

Did you use a "joggler" to bend the repair panel so it made a lap joint inside the arch as opposed to just butting up the repair panel with the old panel as thats what it looks like? Also i take it you just spotted the holes drilled (marked red)?

Did you seam or stitch weld the green line highlighted after or just fill over?
