i am trying to remove my suspension truts to replace the strut top mounts and bearings, but i don't know how to remove the ball joints , i bought a ball joint splitter from halfords but that is completely useless!
is there any other way to do it?

cheers paddy

In what way is it useless?

I've got the fork type which you just beat with a hammer and it's never failed me, can damage the rubbers if you're not careful though,

Another option is to wind the nut out a little and hit that with a hammer instead.

Ball joint splitter is good for the track rod end, just tighten it till its stiff then take a step back............. it will pop off, make sure that your hands aint in the way as it hurts

with the bottom ball joint take the nut off, hit the ring around it remove the ARB drop link by undoing the 2 nuts on the end under the lower arm it should just slip out.......... well it did with mine.

Loosen bottom joint insert bar so it applies downwrds force, stand on bar and hit the hub base around the joint.

i can vouch for that. it does hurt. but the ball joint splitter actually fell off and my thumb was the next thing smashed it with a big mallet

i just use a fork type ball joint separator and give it a good smack with a hammer

mine went pop, tightened it to the point I was actually cutting into the ally its made from, nothing, hit it with lumpy, nothing, stuck my hand in there to try to see how tight it was and BANG, came flying off

i used a scissor type ball joint splitter. the one use titghen with a spanner. wound it up so much i did not think it was goona work but it did. when it went it was like a gun going off! thought i had broken somert.

i think i bought the wrong type of ball joint splitter, i bought a cup type one, anyway i gave up and it's getting done at a local garage tomorrow as the mot is up on the 30th, thanks for the advice though guys, could come in handy if i try again

i use just a long steel bar. undo the ball joint nut and bolt, wd40 the joint where it sits in the hub, use the steel bar under the subframe and over the bottom arm, hold it down by standin on it. if it still dont work, keep ur foot on the bar and just tap the bottom arm with a lump hammer. never let me down on any car!
