Right... So I set out pick my girlfriend up from work 10 miles away. The cars jerky as hell misfiring really badly, which it does sometimes for the first minute or so when it's cold/wet.

Tonight it was worse than usual, and as I was going up a steep hill a couple of miles into the journey the revs fell through the floor, dropped to 2nd, hit the gas, nothing, dropped to 1st, hit the gas nothing but splutters. At this point I'm on sharp blind bend, on an icy road in fog - ****!

It came within a whisker of stalling and I just about managed to creep it round and up, got on the flat and the misfiring was awful, throwing me about. I pulled into a lay-by, and rang my girlfriend, swiftly followed by the RAC.

The car started fine, and misfired a little when revving in neutral, but the second I tried to drive it, it would jerk around and there was no power what-so-ever. So I sat in there listening to music and reading the Haynes manual.

Some hour and a half later a recovery truck turns up. The engine had warmed up a little and ran slightly better but it was still impossible to drive properly. He fiddled round with the distributor and whatnot, and nothing really seemed to be helping. I told him I had just replaced spark plugs, leads, dizzy cap and rotor arm the day before yesterday so it may be linked. He said it's worth checking the amplifier module, giving the carburetter a good clean and treating the petrol.

Basically, he doesn't know. Driving back it wasn't much better, it was drivable but only just. There's the worst sound coming from the back of the exhaust as well. You only hear it when I'm in gear and driving. If I have my foot on the clutch and match the revs it disappears, the second I bring the clutch back up it starts. Sounds like something rattling around in the back box, or a tiny hole blowing. I have a performance exhaust and after it's been driving, i.e. when I finally got home, it was so loud!!

Urg. This car is killing me. Got the MOT before Christmas as well!

oil change as well buddy, also carry wd40 in ya boot and spray it all over leads and dizzy cap to release mositure

yh gove it ago mines been good to me so far touch wood, sounds liek moisture in dizzy cap tbh

mine used to start fine and rev fine but as soon as it went in gear and started to pull the car then all hell went lose and jus went jurky and stalled all he time

Going back to the amp module.

Does it only happen when the car's warmed up, as mine was the same last year.
Basically it'd be driving normally then out of nowhere it would start spluttering, misfiring then die. When trying to restart it, it would turn over but not fire. Only after a while it would play ball and work again.

If you can find a place that does it (I tried my local motor factors), ask them to heat test it and it should show it's getting too hot.
A new one cost me about £25 from said factors (that was cause I was working there lol), but it shouldn't be too expensive I imagine.

i have 4 words for you: get a new car the engine sounds like its turning into a money pit thta money could fund another astra but with a better engine like a 1.6 or a 1.4 mpi

Just changed the spark plugs a few days ago. The cooling fan is bridged all the time so it's always on. I removed it today, and my the temp actually got out the blue for the first time since the summer and is a noticeable difference. I'm gonna replace the thermostat when I get a little more time. Looks pretty easy I think, not sure??

What a bummer.

Mind you the solution could be simple, go through each step slowly. Check your small hose leads for air leaks or collapsed hoses.

All the best ! :heh:

Take the plugs out and check em, make sure the gap is correct on them as you may have caught one putting them in and bent it shut, also check that each plug goes in straight and the crush washer sits hard against the head.

And yeah sort the thermostat those engines dont like running cold should be sitting at about 90deg
