BUT!, can I fit a CDR500 head unit in a 1996 P reg 1.7tdls??

mate you can fit and sterio to your can as long as its a single din sterio.....

Yes you can, also works if you have steering wheel controls

They seems to be selling for mad money these too, upto £80 secondhand.

Yes, and people seem to sell them because the eject motor has gone in them. I've bought two so far, and they have both had knackered motors.
