:sorry: I'm a newbie so please bear with me. I've just bought a 1994 1.8 C18XE GSi with 150k, which has been stood for a year. She had an idle problem before being laid up and was thought to be the crankshaft sensor. I've got the old girl up and running after an oil change, cleaned the ICV, changed the HT leads, checked the plugs and changed the crankshaft sensor (the old one had a perished sleeve). in the hope it had gone but no .
On start up its fine for about 20 seconds then it starts a roughish but steady idle at around 5-600rpm (like it would with a dodgy lead), but the Check engine doesnt illuminate. as the car needs work before gracing the splitter destroying local roads i cant drive it to find any other probs so was hoping someone may have a slight clue before i go mental

Mine does it too , cleaned the ICV and she was better for a couple of days .

I'm going to replace the ICV and see if it helps

its a pain in the ****, as i cant drive it long enough to get the ECU light on to drag off the codes. The light was on before she was stood and she did cut out once or twice, which sounds a bit like the air flow meter, as i had this problem and my old GTE, but on that the engine hunted for idle wheras this just stays flat at 5-600rpm but sounds similar to my scooby at 3000rpm if you know what i mean:sad:

I resently had a problem where my car kept reving up to about 1500 for no apparent reason and stayed there for 10 seconds or so. Dude at the garage said its a common problem in the SPI's when the Idle Speed Control Valve needs cleaning out, they cleaned it out and its been fine for a few days now. Dunno how long it will last before it starts doing it again though judging by Neo's post

Yeah tried the ICV that all seems spot on, although it does rattle if you shake it, dont know if thats normal  bloody cars testing me but i will overcome the evil forces of wiggly amps and mechanical gremlins :heh:

GOT THE SWINE!!! It turns out it was all four sensors!!!, changed throttle sensor, once ECU reset, fault went, got a 2nd hand ICV reset ecu and fault cleared, got a new lambda and inlet temp sensor and now the car is alive!!!
when i started it last weekend it was running sooo rich i nearly passes out, so i traced the lambda wiring and it had chafed through to the core. Whats even better is when fitting the lambda I found its got a full Lexmaul system including the manifold!!

Now just needs bodywork and odd jobs here and there and she'll be able to menace the A47 again

cheers for your help peeps:beer:
