Does Parcel shelf support car!

I dont know if I have posted this in the correct section, sorry if I hav'nt!

Question is....... Does the parcel shelf on an Astra MK3 Saloon provide any support to the car? Reason I ask is its metal and kind of welded onto the sides and I want to take it out. There is a reason for my madness....will show before and after pics, thats if its ok to remove!

iirc it is a structural part of the car, so i wouldn't advise removing it completly, at least not without putting something there to brace the sides

Got a great install in mind! Im taking all the stuff out of my GTE 16v and putting it my MK3 SRI.....reason, I prefer my MK3.......MK2 guys !
