Engine help.

When i bought this car of my mechanic friend he said it originally was a 1.7 D and now it's a 1.4 P, Anyway of knowing the BHP or anything? Not very clean i know but i'll tidy it up a bit.

i'm not being funny but are you sure your car's a mk3? cos that looks like the old carbed astra engine that were in mk1/mk2 astras.

Because it is. It's a 14NV lump from a MK2 Astra. Good for about 75bhp.

It was also fitted to the early Cavalier 1.4 and Nova SR 1.4 .

1.4 depends which you have if you have a single point injection its 60 bhp

if you have mpi iirc its about 80 bhp this is for mk3 engines

You could for a VERY short while buy a MK3 with a 14NV, but this was quickly killed off. Due the emission regs of the time.

should be fairly nippy with 75bhp lobby, should be pretty good on petrol aswell.

This might explain that...

once was a police car

They tend to 'improve' their cars so they have an edge over standard cars... Might have better shocks as the original shocks on a Ph1 mk3 are about as stiff as Play-Doh!

As already said, its a nova sr 1.4,mk2 astra engine.
72bhp.

Wont be too good on fuel, it has a carb......
The carb it has is known to play up too, the automatic choke on them sticks on.

Lobby, having had both the later and earlier versions apart, i can tell you this earlier one is physically more sturdy. The GM varajet carb is crap but it can be converted to a weber which is a vast improvement.

power steering is all done, Saw the mechanic sorting it out, Spoke to the mechanic the other day he said it's got an old engine so that it can be de-catted, how much would a weber thing cost? lol thanks

not sure on price but a set of twin webber 40's would be great on it, they had them on the nova sport it was a 1.3 and was kicking out 87bhp to the standard 1.3 witch was only 69bhp plus it makes a great noise!
