my astra has a big rusty hole in one of the subframe legs, is it possible to use a non gsi subframe to replace it?

also are the bolts that hold it too the chassis stretch bolts and the wishbone bolts aswell?

cheers les.

yes stretch bolts but there are holes in the subframe from brand new (which hole do you mean)

if the subframe has rotted it would have failed an MOT (and tbh if the subframe is fooked the rest of the metal on car will be even worse - subframes are wayyyyyyyy thicker than any other metal on the car)

so basically wheres the hole? and you would need a subframe from a big block car as well.

its definatly a rust hole mate, on the sides of one of the legs bout 6 inches long and all jagged and flaky, wasnt visable until the big splash gaurds were removed, just looked on epc and it doesnt mension they are stretch bolts?

think ill get some anyway cant be much for 4 bolts, what about the wishbone bolts?

cheers les.

post a pic up will ya?

any bolt thats torqued should be a stretch bolt imo - id replace bolts as if the parts are needing replaced the bolts will be pretty fooked too.

:P

whend you last get the torque wrench out when you watched someone replace your wheel?

i would do mate but would mean getting the car up on the ramps again, ill take one when i remove it.

ive replaced subframes before and not bothered but i think ill change these anyway.

also wheel bolts have a specific torque but they arnt stretch, its just to make sure they are the correct tightness, usually stretch bolts will be angle tightened after a specific torque is reached.

yes true i was being a bit vague but if your happy with used possibly rusty bolts to hold your subframe togethor keep em

guess its just my own way of thinking that id replace bolts for certain things - even if they need it or not.

still wouldnt mind seeing the rust on subframe as its pretty hard to believe without seeing if you know what i mean:beer:

yeah no worries mate ill check the bolts over and see what i think once removed.

ill defo get pics of the rust though there was quite big (1 inch) pieces hanging off so definately not right lol.

march iirc i only bought it around a month ago, bit of damage to the lower cross member aswell looks like it may of hit a curb at some point, maybe that cracked the paint and started the rot??

the subframe is 3mm thick plate, I can't imagine it rusting through in 30 years!

It's probably a factory hole, that's lost it's paint.

here you go:

doesnt look good does it although they do have a curve there anyway, it does pull a little to that side aswell so it needed a subframe anyway.
