Rear Disc Conversion

yes mate you can, do a search for rear disc conversion... loads have done it mate.... i know ROB and BIGNAYF have done it.. look on there owners diarys for details...

Pay £5 and there's a guide in the member's section ;)

Really isn't hard though - coupla bits from Vaux, some new brake hose and it's literally a 4-bolt swap.

Yes, I did it to my old cabrio which started life as a 2.0 8v. You've already got the brake bias on the beam too. So just need to change the hub assemblies and get a new handbrake cable.

what did i have to pay Rob? bout £15 on new copper brake lines as the others were stuck tight! i got the whole setup of a 2.0 16v incl handbrake cable and 1 guide () for £50

Best thing to do is to soak the unions in WD40 a few weeks before you do the conversion.....re-soak them every few days. I did on mine and they came off nicely :)

i tried that and they just wouldn't budge!

did you gun the 4 bolts on the stub axle off, or by hand?

16mm?

By hand. You can't get a gun to them unless you've got a nice big extension.

says in haynes manual to renew these bolts when taking off, you reckon using them again would be alright?

yea its fine, i reused them. no problems

Use big molegrips and feck the old unions. Always use new unions and re flare the pipes, and then put a bit of vaseline around the area to ensure they don't rust!

sorted guys will i be able to use the ones of a cav gsi coz i seen one in the scrappys today ?

No. Cav GSis have independant rear suspension.

I've managed to 5 rear disc conversions now and I've never needed to renew the rear pipes. I must OF been lucky.

so astra dan, did u just bend the copper pipe wen doin the rear disks conversion then?how difficult it the handbrake cable to fit an wot is involved?

Yeah just bend the pipes on a nice big radius to avoid kinking the pipe.

You need an Astra GSi hand brake cable, listed as 'rear dics models' in the trade club book (90373855, £13.20 +vat), and the two brackets (90473888 and 90473889) to guide it past the rear springs, about £1.50 each from Vaux. One has to come from Germany.

or just get them off the donor car. 2.0 16v sport will do fine. everything you need is there

or just go down motor factors and get some spangly new soft ones for a few quid :)
