AL's Mk3 Merit XE

you have no heaters at all Al? isnt it a pig in the winter?

Heaters didn't really work too well anyway tbh dude! Got a little screen demister blower to fit and that'll be it :)

Suede wheel + racing gloves + wooly hat ftw :heh:
mincer

First update in a few weeks from me...

Had a CV boot give up the other week - took ****ing ages to clean all the grease out of the brakes/arch/wheel

August-20-1.jpg

Good as new though...

August-20-2.jpg

Birchy used some of this stuff as TOTB as he didn't have an oil cooler fitted - conisidering I still haven't gotten around to sorting my cooler either it made sense to chuck a can in - has really helped too, much less crap coming out of my breather now!

August-20-3.jpg

However it hasn't mattered too much as i've had the Signum to roll around in for a couple of weeks! When driving gently it can do this!

August-20-4.jpg

However 100mph + cruise control has been the norm - managed 10.4mpg on a really good thrash  diesel V6 consumption = ****. But I haven't had to pay for the fuel and its given the Ashtray a nice rest!

So with the Astra out of daily service for a bit I ordered up some heat wrap to do the manifold finally. Trial fitted to work out lengths with it dry...

August-20-6.jpg

Cut the lengths I wanted for the primaries.

August-20-7.jpg

Then soaked the wrap and attatched it all, temp fitted with cable ties...

August-20-9.jpg

Once done it was a bit steamy - and ****ing smelly! Can really feel the benefit of it though - bay temps are way down and you can actually touch the bonnet without burning your hand after a run now!

August-20-10.jpg

I've also managed to squeeze in to the garage backwards, leaving me tonnes of space at the front of the car if I need to work on it :)

August-20-11.jpg

Which paved the wa yfor the welcome return of my little helper!

August-20-12.jpg

Then today some new shiny bits turned up from Kelsport! Wanted a new heatshield to cover the top of the manifold where the heat wrap looks a bit ****ty  The stainless rocker boths etc will go on when I get my new rocker & belt cover soon...

August-20-13.jpg

Looks good in place!

August-20-14.jpg

I also purchased a new aux pulley last week - going to stick it on at the weekend when I have 20 mins spare :) Its a TX Autosport one boguht via JBI Motorsport (trade on eBay) - seems to be very good quality and weighs as much as a gnats ****.

Now I have three big jobs to do ASAP...

1) Crack in manifold has re-surfaced despite a tonne of sealant - so manifold needs to come back off for welding.

2) Skirts are going to come off - i'll need to fil lthe holes in the sills I had to drill to fit them so will probably do the lower part of the panels in matt black :) So my Steinmetz skirts will be for sale next week with any luck...

3) The crack in my floor under the drivers seat has unfortunately re-crack, a few mm over from where I welded it up previously - except this time its ****ing huge and is a major major worry tbh - hopefully going to get the car in to the garage next week so that they can straighten the floor out and weld a plate in to give it some strength back. I'll grab some pics in the next day or too but put it this way: it allows a LOT of water in to the car :pmsl:

what do you use to wet the heat soak?

well I've just spent a little over an hour reading thou this thread and i must say its bloody stunning work mate, i wish i had the head n willingness to do this. feels like i owe you something just for looking . well done al :hail::hail::hail::hail:

Thanks mate :)

what do you use to wet the heat soak?

Erm...water  Couple of buckets, fairly warm with a very very small amount of washing up liquid just to make it smell nice

--------------------------------------------------------------------

I'm in a bit of a dilemma type situation at the moment - it needs quite a few jobs doing that I don't really want to do, it seems like a lot of work on a **** shell that i'm really getting bored of.

Got the week off wor knext week and the Signum to roll around in for another couple so I might break the dis-Astra next week then find a tidy sport to put my engine in to - enjoy having a full interior and heaters etc - basically a practical useabvle car! Either pineapple or flame red...

We'll see though - gonna sleep on it and go from there!

al the best Al

I've come to a decision...

...i'm 90% sure that i'm going to break the Astra next week. I've finally had enough of ****ing about with it! The shell is knackered, i'm not happy with most of it and most of all i'm just plain bored with the car.
Going to keep some of the bits (engine, steering wheel interior bits and wheels) but flog the rest then get either a Tigra or another Astra to chuck it in to.

Ideally i'd likea Mk3 Sport 3 door in red

If anybody fancies bobbing over to mine on Sunday / bank holiday Monday with an engine crane they'd more than welcome!

i did wonder how long you would last with no creature comfts - you sticking it all in another mk3 then?

just think this is what you want mate ;)
