it may well be your tappetts (hydraulic lifters) that are worn. they are prone to it when not serviced regulary. best thing to try is a good service with fresh oil, or wynes lifter treatment although doesnt work every time,

failing that best option is to get new lifters but get fenuine INA ones as the ebay cheap stuff will probably make it worse than it is. another option is to take them all out and clean them out manually, the tappetts are like plungers. you need to keep pushing the plunger to clear all the old oil out and leave them to soak in new oil. heres a walkthrough

At the last change of oil it started making a horible noise. Before than I used GM 10W40 oil an then I changed to ARAL 10W40 oil. The car runned on ARAL 10W40 fine before. What may be the problem?

My tappets were starting to make a tapping noise. I drained out the 10w/40 oil out. Refilled with some 5w/30, a new filter and some engine flush and kept the above mix in for a week. I then dropped the oil and filter and replaced it with 10w/40.

Since doing the above, I very rarely hear my tappets now (even after the car has been sat untouched for 3 weeks).

If however that doesn't solve the problem (or at least reduce the noise slightly), you may have to completely strip out the tappets of in worst case scenario (sp?) replace them.

Hope this helps and you get it sorted out soon.

Personally I'd either clean or replace them. Depending on the cost I'd replace them while they are out anyway. But cleaning them means just squeezing the oil out in a vice and make sure the holes are clear

Autovaux prices aren't bad and they are INA ones, i've heard so many people say the cheap eBay Trechii ones are poor.

Back again, same problem. At every oil change the tappet start being very noisy.

I've changed them a couple of time with INA oanes, but this resolved the problem till the new oil change when thei started tapping again.

I've even used Hydro-Stößel-Additiv, but this time with no effect. Don't know what to do more.

Could it be possible that the oil line to be stuffed with calamine? I say that because as the engine is geting wormer and the oil thiner the sound starts to dissapear.

As I was saing, in the past I've changed tappets with INA ones and it was solved til the next new oil, I did the same now but the problem is still there. I use 10W40 oil.

Please help.

My GSi tapped for years when it was cold. I had the sump gasket changed and the pick-up cleaned and it was then silent for a couple of years. Its now slowly started to tap again. As youre probably thinking, you need decent tappets and a clean pick-up. Maybe the oil pump could not be 100%? This is probably not worth a mention but here goes. My mate had a Corsa GSi years ago and that tappet like crazy until some eagle eye spotted that there was a ford stamp on the dip-stick!! He was driving around a litre down on oil but the level was spot on according to the stick!!

The mechanic measured pomp pressure and told it was fine. The sump it's clean.
I'm sure that it tapps only on the cylinder near the gear box, number four I supose.
Before new oil it was tappin only on the inlet axis only at cold but now with the new oil it's tapping on the exhaust axis too, permanently.
I've put new INA hydraulic lifters but no change. What can I do more?

my ecotec is noisey at cold, calms down once warm, but mine on cold start revs to like 2,500 to 3,000 without me touching throttle which im sure doesnt help,
i put a post up and someone showed me how to take the piston out of the lifter and clean up to replace, ive got a few spare lifters as i had a friends spare engine, so when i find time im going to do them, and at the same time valve stems

I use 10W40 Castrol.

Question: Is the head the same at C18XE, C18XEL, X18XE, X20XEV ?
