Mk3 Project

Used undiluted detergent first and let it dwell for 10 minutes or so and then scrubbed it with a brush, washed it off and then sprayed bilt hamber surfex on it and then scrubbed it and washed off . Was a bit of work.

Definatly more subtle than me, I used Petrol haha.

Top work, looks like your rust was localised to the studs on the body, same as mine.

So its been a while

Car is away to be sprayed , brother in-law doing it so hes only getting at it between jobs.

Got rubber for the wheels but still need to get them blasted and painted/powdercoated
IMG_1640.jpg
split down the front legs and other bits needing blasting
IMG_1641.jpg
bought a load of new suspension bits and cables.
IMG_1643.jpg
Finally over the weekend I took into cleaning the engine and box leaving it ready for painting . Just going to coat in some VHT satin black or something.

Started like this
IMG_1642.jpg
Ended like this
IMG_1714.jpgIMG_1715.jpgIMG_1716.jpg

Block was pretty clean but the box and the belt side were a mess. Lots of scrubbing.

Need to get the rocker off and a few other bits prepped for some crinkle black. not sure whether to try myself or get someone to do it.

Joys of relatives , still no car painted yet. Think they have prepped the car and kit.

my local windscreen guy said he was able to source a top tint screen for me which I’m over the moon about .

sent a load of parts off to be blasted and only got the bigger parts back last week . so painted them over the weekend with some thick paint the painter gave me which they use to paint suspension parts .

When taking the rear axle hubs apart the shoe mounting plate where the tab comes out for the cable to attach , there is a small plate and a bit of rubber which was in a mess . Going to have to try and make some new bits for this .

split the rear calipers down as I have a rebuild kit for them. Absolute nightmare trying to get the old pistons out . They were well corroded

Have everything back from the blasters and painted now. including the callipers, just have to rebuild them now.
IMG_2288.jpgIMG_2288.jpg

I took into the tank and heat shields as it had surface rust only , so hit it with the grinder and then some rust convertor .
IMG_2224.jpg
IMG_2238.jpg

IMG_2237.jpg

Hit it with some of the thick black paint that i used on the suspension bits and then started to coat in silver.
IMG_2309.jpgIMG_2321.jpg

I have to get the seats dropped off to the trimmers . The gsi seats I had were a mess and the drivers bolster was gone.

So i took off the cloth at the time, few weeks later a guy came to me with a set of mint sport seats so they will be the donors. Going to have the gsi fabric and black leather sort of like carlton gsi seats

IMG_2220.jpgseats.jpg

I got some sheet steel and some new rubber as i need to make new plates to fix over the hole where the handbrake cable connects. The old ones were a mess.

Cor yea my rubber parts had basically vanished they were that rusty. Tank and subframes are looking super fresh mate, top work!

Havent updated in a while, had a new baby girl arrive which restricted the free time and with my brother in law doing the painting he was in no rush so only have everything back from him last week.

Ive parts coming out of my ears now lol

I didnt know what to do with the handles and mirrors and ended up keeping them black so the painter gave them a coat of texture satin and they look like brand new

IMG_4091.jpg
IMG_4092.jpgIMG_4093.jpg

Realsied when i went to fit the rear dust guards that the ones i got were never going to fit and done some more research and found these which are perfect fit.
s-l500 (1).jpg

So agave the last remaining bits a coat of black , was a bit cold here last few weeks so set up a mini spray booth with a heater and they turned out perfect.

IMG_4217.jpg

Got some Bilt hamber Deox C to try and remove rust from the bolts and its unreal stuff. 24hrs in some hot water and a bit of the deox c and i had hardly no rubbing to do on them.

IMG_4181.jpg
IMG_4207.jpg

So its all just sitting patiently waiting for me to get some time to start building it up again.

IMG_7884.jpg

Just realised that i havent updated this in a long time.

To keep it a bit sort im about 95% there now with the car.

Engine in and now running , just brakes to bleed up.

IMG_5874.jpg

IMG_5878.jpg

Need to wet sand a few areas and give the car a full polish up which i can tackle over the winter.

Interior is where im stuck, seats have been with the trimmer for the guts of 3 months now , had a real good set of front seats with no foam damage but the drivers bolter had started wo ware through so i got them to cut off the grey fabric and fit satin black leather with a bit of a grain to try and match that 90's type leather they used. So hope to get them in the next week or so.

Bout what was supposed to be a mint carpet off a guy and when i got it there were stain all over it which wouldn't do and id waste more time trying to clean it and it wouldnt of been perfect. so i used carpet dye on my old carpet and its came up great.

Just need a vauxhall horn push now. I got a real good condition wheel a few years back but it had the blitz on it but couldnt let it go as they are hard to come by now in good condition .

thats a fresh looking car mate! awesome work, hope you took loads of photos. Honestly its a shame to drive them after lol

You using the special but extremely rare/expensive rivets to fix the skirts/door trims, just purchased these myself for around £60 for 40 odd rivets!!! (skirts only as luckily my GSI doors are ok)

I managed to find someone on ebay whole sold those rivets, they were a bit cheap than gm, but not by loads!

Sean, car looks to be sitting nice and around standard ride height, can i ask which springs you are using please?

Im not fully sure on the front as i used the springs that came with the gsi donor car to see what they look like but im assuming they are 60mm .

The passengers rear was sitting 10/15mm higher than the drivers and i seen a guy selling a full FK 60mm spring kit.

Put the rears on and its levelled them out a bit more but its sitting the same height .

Long story short i think its 60mm all round.

I actually though it would lot lower on the rear at 60mm but i only have 5l of fuel in the tank and no rear seats in yet which might make a difference.

The other thing is I have a brand new Gas shock kit al round so i might have to fiddle with the damping settings :noidea:

Thanks for the reply, so far lower than stock then, i am looking for near stock height as want a standard resto, however i may go with the Eibach 30/30 now then. I've ordered new Bilstein B4 shocks all round (close enough to OEM IMO).

Car looks great BTW , can i also ask where you sourced your new wishbones and caliper rebuild kits from from as i will likely need the same.

Went to big red for the rebuild kit

The wishbones i just went to my local motorfactors and they ordered them in for me.
