Alright guys
My mk4 is making a funny noise and wandering if you could supply your thoughts to two problems i cant seem to figure out.
Since de-restricting the airbox the car is now really loud with a big reverbarating sound inside the cabin, though doesnt seem to sound any differnt from outside the car, is this normal (as no differnce like this was made to my mk3 of vec b when de restricted them) or any thoughts on whats causing it?
So far check the mounting of the box, the air filter fitted correctly, tightend a screw which was loose where two of the box mountings fix. The sounds is nearly the same at like 2k-5k in the rev range with noise only slightly increasing from it, car revs up through and pulls through it fine. Is really startng to annoy me now and cant seem to get it sorted.

The other is i can get the 12v fag lighter to work. I have checked the fuses and cant see a blown fuse and cant imagine its the fuse as the light still comes on around the 12v hole. Also tried my 2nd lighter and got the still the same problem as thought i might have had a faulty one. and would like it so i can get the sat nav working again.
I know they run of a seperate power supply but as they share the same earth im guessing the fuse cant be the issue, also had to differnt fag lighters and both seem to be the same

Asked on both mig and aoc and neither have been overly helpful, where as you guys are normally pretty good, any ideas apprietiated.
Thanks
Will

fag lighter is probably bad wiring, find both ends of it and do a resistence check. Try de-de-restricting the air box and see if it cures it then youll know roughly which bit is causing the problem. Did you take the resonator out of it too? Maybe just refit that if you did also check the arch liners and any other bits of trim near the airbox. Hope it gets sorted for you, im trying to locate a rattle myself and its a pita

need to get my self a resistance checket really as not got one :/ but is probably down to bad wiring.
unfortutnly cant restrict the air box as my dad throuh the pipes away as i left them lying on the side in the workshop and he thought they were rubbish :( resonator wasnt touched just the internal two pipes at each end.
May check the arch liners but dont think it would be them, trying to check random bits of trim and fans and that with no luck driving me nuts lol.
Good luck with yours mate.
cheers

check the wiring for the cig-lighter as it might not be connected up as for the air box is it just the pipes inside the box you removed mate

thats crazy mate it shouldn't do anything like your saying just change the noise and improve the air flow really every thing connected up tight and in the right place. The cig-lighter you sure its run off the fuse you checked i'd check them all just in-case its connected to a diffrent one or blown

No shouldnt as never did with mk3 or vec b but seems to much of a coincidence, checked everything around the box and just cant see anything, it comes and goes aswlel not always permanemt.
ive double checked all fuses and all are fine thugh no harm in triple checking them.

Would there be a somthing blockin it every so often in the pipes or somthing mate

Wouldnt have thought so as the only things I have touched and removed is the box itself so doubt while doing that anything would have gotten into the pipes big enough to block it :/
Cheers pard :)

seems abit of a wierd one this mate, when my friend de restricted his airbox there was no vibrating inside the cabin. Only thing I could suggest though, is maybe its not the airbox at all, but the exhaust heat sheild instead, as there is one just under the centre of the car, they tend to rust, and drop down onto the exhaust, and its this transfere of virbation that might be the cause

+1 To that i had that on the middle box bloody anoying. Take it off that what i did +no problem come mot time mate

Will check this tomorrow once in from work, though again another thing i doubt as the car only had a new exhaust fitted a while back and nothing was mentioned about the shields, though is a possibility that they may not have botherd with it. Though the sound sounds more so as if its from under the bonnet, also while driving the car cant really notice the tone differnce doing my nut in! No vibrating gareth its just some sort of loud reverbarating like sound, cant feel it.
Cheers for the idea guys shall let you know what i find under the exhaust!

No worries mate, well I hope you get to the bottom of it, i know how annoying these things can be

Just had a look now as had the car in a convienent point cant see any heat sheild hangind down or touching. Forgot to say aswell the sound isnt made when the car is idle and reved while not moving, sound only comes while driving the car.

hmmm, then that might point towards drive train? if its not there when the engine is running, but at a stand still

Is it still there if say you stick it in neutral or dip the clutch when moving along mate? Loud reverberating sounds a bit like wheel bearings, especially with you saying only when its moving

Not tried sticking it in neutral while rolling tbh, and cant remember while dipping the clutch without driving and thinking about it.
Now wheel bearings isnt something I have thought about with this, but there was squeeking coming fromt he wheels which I thought could have been bearings which has now gone but on occasion comes back, but was told if the bearings had gone I would feel tramlings and wobbling through the wheel which i dont?

not nessacerily, more often than not the bearings start to whine when they get worn, though I suppose if they get notchy they could transmit noise first. I should imagine steering wheel wobble would be pretty much in the advance stanges of wheel bearing failure as the bearings would be pretty damn loose and close to collapse

it sounds like wheel bearing to me. my mk4 had front wheel bearings canged twice because of wide alloys on it uping the strain on them making them noisy but they are safe and good. if u put standerd set of wheels on front have a drive see if u hear it then.
