My latest problem:sad: recently fitted a second hand
starter motor and after a week noticed that when i turn
engine over my rev counter fluctuates wildy, it now has started
turning over quickly to start with and then getting very lazy and
draining battery and wont start without a jump, any help or ideas
would be great, also have checked all engine earths and starter wiring,
the reason i dont think the starter is shagged is that it turns over fine to start
with,i can also hear relays clicking in fuse box when i turn it over as if ignition
is turning on and off!!

Does it start as normal with jump leads on? Sounds like a battery is on its way out

it kinda starts with a jump but still makes relays click on and off
and takes a few turns over, once it starts it runs fine

Doesn't sound like starter as it's spinning to start, and I think the battery is fine?
Could be ignition timing is out? Is your distributor loose?

Strange thing is, the starter has nothing to do with the rev signal ??

Still put my bets on the battery

right,i changed battery today and its not that, checked all
ignition wiring too.tomoro im going to take starter out and give
it a strip down and see whats going on there.failing that ill
get my mate thats a electrition to have a look and probably re wire the
starter, still no closer to finding out whats happening to my
rev counter tho!! i hate electrical work:sad:

If the starter was turning, then the starter was doing its job and was ok. You have a different problem, I would try a different battery too

the starter i had would spin but not engage with the ring gear,
the scroll was knackered

but you can hear if the engine is turning or not, and when someone says the starter is turning, I assume the engine is too, unless otherwise stated.

yeah i had that sometimes if you slam it in gear or rock it abaout in gear or something it would re-engage but soon **** up again went through 5 starter motors in the space of a month :)

sorted

took starter to bits last nite and found one
of the magnets rattling about inside, this was
causing the armiture to earth out on the starter
casing thus draining my batt instantly and sending
a huge current down the engine earth making my
electrics go mental!! i managed to make 1 good
starter out of 2 knackered ones, its great being able to get in and
just drive again! i learned a lesson ,DONT BUY SECOND HAND:rolleyes:
