Right, before this engine goes in the bin, how hard is it to change the timing belt and associated pulleys? The guy at the garage diagnosed it as a cam belt issue, then went on to say the crank pulley is ceased on, and would require heat to remove which would damage various other bits that are rare? Some gears and rubber dampened he went on about..

Is this going to be a nightmare or should I be ok?

Whatever is wrong, service parts for an Xev are not rare. I wouldn't say it was a novice job, but it's not a massive job for a garage, labour will be a fortune though.

I'm not 100% when it comes to 20xevs but I'm sure the only thing you could damage would be the crank seal and/or the aux belt.

The crank pulley doesn't need to come off to change the timing belt, just the outer aux belt driving pulley (which does often get rusted on, but a puller will pop it off with ease). Cam belts on an XEV are a piece of ****.

I agree. The crank shaft pulley stays on. You dont undo the big crank shaft nut you just undo the four torx headed fasteners to remove the aux pulley.

I also remove the airbox to gain the access required but it is very easy to do. No special tools are required.

Can do my X20XEV with my eyes shut (well, almost lol).... Im on my 5th head re-build so far!

Bottom pulley has to come off, best way is some sort of extractor or..... get a hammer and hit it at 4 points side to side and it will eventually come loose. When I first did mine I did that and after 1 hour solid it came off! Also bent but since got replaced. When I replaced it I put copper slick behind where it mates to the crank and it now comes off fine with light taps. Also replaced the trox for stainless socket caps :)

X20XEV parts aren't rare either so talking plop there mate.

That video missed a step, after you've rotated the engine twice and checked the timing marks, you have to check the belt tension is still correct. If it isn't; adjust and spin it over twice again, check and repeat 'til it stays right.
