Would it be something to do with whatever passes for vacuum advance on injection engines? As it does seem to behave like the vac advance isn't working due to running ok when you ease off the throttle but bogging down on acceleration...could that be it?

It would be worth cleaning the selector switch contacts to see if that's at fault. Fairly easy job to do, although can be a bit fiddly...

It's worth taking the time to remove the rusted nuts yourself, it will save you a fair few quid. The three at the front pipe end are fairly easy to remove as they are just a straight through nut and bolt. Spray them with WD40 or something similar and leave them over night, then use whatever...

No problem... they are a little tricky to get apart, and be careful you don't lose any of the fiddly bits.

Does it change through all the other gears ok? It could be the selector switch, a common problem with these auto boxes, it's a collection of contact plates that are selected by spring loaded contacts on a 'sweeping arm' type arrangement. They get worn with age and clogged up with old grease etc...
