hiya all can any body help in recommend an alarm/immobiliser, for insurance & peace of mind ( you know lock it go away and come back and its still there all intact just as you left it) or is there something that can make the standard alarm a insurance approved one. before i get stuck in modding my car the usual alloys and so on. any advice would be fantastic thanks for looking

MK3 astra's came fitted with a immobiliser as standard from late 94 so to upgrade it anymore you can do so with a Thatham 2-1 upgrade alarm. I'd always recomend Sigma with their S34 but then it's the alarm make I fit at work :)

You should be able to get one supplied and fitted for around £250

Thanks mate are the S34 any good and would it be recognized as a cat 1 or 2 by insurance companies.I have been looking at Clifford and toad alarms .

Personally I'd got toad, either C5T2, or a ai 606.
Around £300 or less fully fitted with cert, only ever had one problem with a toad that was down to the alarm.
The vast majority of alarm probs are down to poor fitting, so use a long established firm not a grab the money and run firm, of which there are plenty.

Thanks mate I'll have a look and get some quotes for them .

i can recomonend a sterling ONE alarm (Thatcham approved CAT 1), i got one fitted for £200 by a professional with certificate. Sterling is to toad what FLi is to Vibe but the products are all of a very high standard. my alarm has never failed me once, neither has it alarmed for no reason, i would definatly buy another.

thats the alarm, its quite good because it is very easy to upgrade it with things like microwave and remote alerting etc.
The guy that fitted my alarm got it at trade price then fitted it for me, that may be the route you want to go down. best thing to do is have a ring around, some people will try and sell you a more expensive alarm with no extra features, so its better to know what you want and how much your going to pay for it before enquiring. perhaps even asking for a specific model of alarm. if they do offer you a different alarm to what you had in mind then be sure to research it before handing over any money, i wanted a toad ai606 when i set out to get an alarm but the guy recommended a sterling one as its cheaper and can be more reliable when it comes to extra features such as total closure etc. i looked it up on the net and read some forums and couldnt seem to find any serious complaints so went ahead and bought it. no dissapointment since.

hope that helped buddy.

i just looked at the ai606 on that companies website and noticed the ai606 has more features according to them but my alarm does everything the ai606 does. just has 2 buttons instead of 4 on the fob.

The S34 would be recongised as a Cat 1 alarm

I can honestly say that we have a 99% sucess rate on these alarms, with only 2 faulty units in the possibly 4 years they have been out

They are good solid alarms. Maybe they don't have all the gimicks that the cliffords and toads have but they will protect the car as any cat 1 alarm should

I believe all the other alarms mentioned in this thread are full cat 1 alarms rather than a upgrade. If you wanted the gimicks i'd go for the Toad Ai606 though

Thanks for the information mate.

The "cat" reffers to which catergory the device falls into, there is cat 2 and 1 mostly with 1 being higher.
eg a alarm only will be a cat 2, but a alarm combined with immobiliser will be cat 1(if it meets the tests), parts of the C5T2 can be added seperately to bring a approved cat 2 system(alarm only) up to cat one by the addition of the immobiliser, think that's right anyhow, getting tired!!

or you could pick up a standard toad ai606 for........ £100 new get it fitted for another £100 with certificate and save yourself some ££ with the option to upgrade to total closure and other "gimicks" later on
