Dave b's Megane Rs225 diary

Love it Dave great work

so i think this is the first day in about two weeks i haven't been flat out doing this car, so time for an update! I was in a rush to get this in a driveable condition for the missis so then i had the astra on the road too! So i cracked on lol

Carbon fibre effect hydro dipped door bump strips. These are amazing quality from a friend of a friend who does it for a living, mega happy with them.

door handles in

and then basically what happened is i got **** loads done and forgot to take any photos lol, As if by magic the cambelt, oil change, followed by the complete front end being built up

full

then built up the passenger door and got that on, you can see its a bit late a night in this picture one night

touched in the bumper after i scratched it, was mega mega pissed about this, the bumper slipped off my stands, but i did an incredible save and only scratched the very edge, was always gonna happen i suppose!

rest of the trims on, other bits and bobs done, down on its wheels, and a first look at the nearly complete artical!

So it between btcc and work and juggling life in general, finally got the last little touches done!

Then thats it! job done. I still have harnesses to fit but thats for another day as i need to work out the angle to FIA spec etc to make sure they are safe, which will more than likely mean the floor needs drilling etc. But for now it is perfectly safe with a normal seat belt and buckle :).

Well not done much one this one since finishing the painting, which is always a good thing! but time to take it off the road. amy used to drive it all winter but i'm not allowing that after the effort i put in painting it! So the RS is sorn and final wash before going into hiding. Paint is still all there! result lol

full

fresh, so stuck it in the the workshop, wheels off to be cleaned and start taking the fuel tank out ready to fit the harnesses! This never got done during the painting stage because to fit them properly is hard work and requires welding to, which means you have to gut the interior!

so interior out, chucked a seat back in and got measuring, now luckily there is a proper FIA diagram of what angle the harnesses have to be at, so this make life easy enough, just have to put the seat in and have a measure up with the digital angle gauge, then worry about how your gonna get a plate in there later

so held some harnesses in place, managed to get the rear at 39 degrees which is a winner, any less i would of had serious issues fitting them! possible need a harness bar or something. The megane will get a roll cage eventually but i can't afford it any time soon cause even ones u weld in yourself are around the 600 quid mark!

So after a bit of playing around, i managed to order some more eyebolts (made sure they were lifting grade so nice and strong) and use some of the original holes in the car, seat mounting and seat belt mountings, so you can be sure they are nice and strong anyway and designed to take the force of an impact!

so got the rears in

sides used original this side

and made on this side

and two in the floor, amy didn't buy 6 point harnesses, but i want them in the eventually for track days etc and while the car is apart, rude not to!

full

all done, holes made, checked my angles, look good, so need to get the plates on the other side

full

so got the plates on, ground some bear metal. This plates don't actually need to be welded in, but i do think its best to, couple of reasons really, very unlikely but stops the plate spinning and coming loose, but also nearly all of them are in very difficult to access places and for the sake of a little tack weld to stop this, rude not to! They were actually a proper paint to take weld due to being thick and stainless, and the car metal being thin and normal steel (thin because cars are double skin in a lot of places for strength)

so went to use the welder.....
and it broke

I still feel sick with jealousy seeing your workshop!!

Nice work on the harnesses, nice to see some thought gone into them about fitting them properly.

Cheers mate, I never get bored being able to walk out there and work on cars, makes it so much easier! Having so much kit out there aswell. proper man cav!

I know! My Dad is just the same, I went round to see him at 9pm last night, it was -1 outside but he was in the garage with the heater on working away! I would have no change of getting anything done lol.

so the welder is all fixed! Basically i wasn't gettin any gas at the torch So once i had a bit of a look at it, got the multimeter out and followed the gas circuit and found a faulty gas solenoid, basically lets the gas in from the bottle when u pull the trigger.
I needed more gas anyway so got some new gas, new solenoid for 15quid and shes was all good again!

so cracked on, plates fitted, tack welded to stop them spinning, bit of etch primer then a thick overcoat of stone chip. Perfect!

time to put the interior back in!
