just wondering if i can still get decent bass and a decent sound out of upgraded front and rear speakers? can't have a sub or 6x9's as i use the boot alot and the dog is in there quite a bit on trips out ect.

Can i run them front and rear speakers off an amp? im not after earth shattering bass, but a bit is always nice

i've got some upgraded front speakers in there i think (been so long i cant remember now!) although no idea if they are any good or not. Never had an amp before so you will have to put up with me asking silly questions

Also the interior will be stripped right down soon to fit sound deadening and new carpets/plastics, should i take this oppurtunity to run new wires to the back speakers and for the amp? (can i bolt that to the back of the rear bench? cant see why not?)

oh and any suggestions? no idea what sort of speakers or amp i would be looking for! dont want to spend a massive amount on it, just want it to sound clear and have a bit of a thump to it

I know you can get 6.5" subs so you could replace one of the speakers with a sub and then have an amp in your glove box sorted :)

Wouldn't that give an uneven sound though? Like I said I'm a newbie to ice though!

Quite possibly. What you could do is get a small 100~ watt under seat sub if they are still about. I think Alpine make one.

Amp and Component speakers up front might do the trick. Mine throw out too much bass and volume atm and actually rattle the door cards. But if you want bass you can physically feel a sub is the best way. I know you said you cant have a sub but have a look at daveb's Gsi, false floor with a sub mounted, you could put a metal grille over the sub face.

amp and speakers sounds fine for me then as i was going to lay down sound deadening all over anyways just to keep road noise down. Nah dont want a false floor either, too much effort just for a little bit of bass!

A decent set of components (Diamond, Rainbow, JL Audio etc, etc, etc) on a good quality amp will give you a little bass, not thumping bass but it's the best you can do without a sub or 6x9's.

Yeah i dont want panel rattling bass, just want enough for the music to sound good

was hoping of a budget of around £50 front speakers, £50 rear speakers, £100 amp and about £200 for head unit?

Although dont think i'll get decent speakers for that though?

will be on the look out

been adviced to get infinity kappa's for front and backs (components up front and coaxials rear i think, maybe other way round ) and a 4 channel amp giving out 100rms per channel?

i dont really understand that tbh but the guy seems to know what hes talking about! still gonna shop around though.

what size's are the front and rear speakers? i think the fronts are 17cm and rears 13cm?

Second hand audio is a good way of doing things, I got a JL Audio amp for £40 off egay, RRP £350.

17cm/6.5" up front. I wouldn't bother too much about the rears. They don't do a lot and the mounting for them is too flimsy to handle any power. Spend your money up front.

but if i have shonky rear speakers wont the sound distort when the music is turned up??

I can't hear my rear speakers over the components when cranked up. I cant hear the difference if the rears are turned off also. They're not worth bothering with if you're on a budget like yours.

Well I don't mind spending a bit on them, looking at around £50 for the fronts and same for the rear, will probs end up spending more on both though  have a full car quite often so rear speakers will always be on and don't want them to hear ****!

Also what wiring should I be looking at? Assuming upgrading the wiring will help as I would imagine the astras will be crap!

depends on what power speakers ana amp you get best of asking what guadge wiring to get when perchasing your goods mate

i have a full set of infinity refference speakers (16cm in front and 6x9s in the shelf) which are amped off a 800Watt (max) FLI amp. this gives plenty of bass without any distortion and the sound quality is great.

(i have also fitted a sub and second amp in the boot, but am using a fast plug so i can remove it by undoing one plug giving me my boot space back!)

if you try looking in halfrauds! they actually have some pretty good stuff in there which is sometimes on sale, and its always worth asking if they have any obsalete stock still in the back, as they tend to flog it for cheap! i got my FLI amp for £40 cos they wanted rid of it.
