Why is this? I could put a full tank in and it dont recongise it to go off..the fuel sensor seems fine? maybe time for a new one?

It is most likley the fuel level sensor yes. Its in the tank under the fuel pump iirc

cant say that any astra ive had has one.. its got the symbol on the dash but it always looks like it lights up with the dash lights and makes me wonder if its just a symbol to show which is the fuel guage?

Little yellow petrol pump next to the fuel gauge. Most of the rev counter clocks have them I think.
yeah i know where it is.. jsut mine doesnt change when i get low on fuel. and always lights up with the dash lights so makes me wonder if its jsut the symbol to show which is the fuel guage or if its ment to actually be a low fuel warning light
It's ment to light up when your low no fuel so your senser is prob's dead 
where is the sensor.. located with the sender?
