okay all ive ever done is wash and a quick polish and i know that is a lazy approch, after seeing some gleming car's im looking into restoring my paint work too its best, my car is a red astra gsi and with most red vauxhall's its starting to go pink now ive left it for a few weeks and salt has built up and the bonnet and roof are starting to go pink been thniking off a clay bar with a good polish and a decent wax to protect the finish but i went to halford's and i got lost looking at all the products avalible now my budge is around £100 and thats for shampoo, clay bar, polish, wax, also thinking off buying a polishing machine as i want to make my gsi shine like a **** house door  soo my question is simple what are the best products out there on a budget and what steps do i need to take im willing to spend 30 to 40 hours work on this ! many thanks

heya mate your best bet probably start with a good shampoo (10 quid) then claybar kit by meguiars (20quid ) then as for polish you cud go for megs again or for beginners autoglym super resin polish easy to work with and gives good results but is mostly fills scrtches and swirls so washes of easily , then for wax again meguiars tech wax is a good un for good results for beginner and reasonable prices .
not paintwork but another god investment is meguiars endurance tyre gel as it really finishes the car off and looks the dogs danglies ?
all thisd available at your local halfords aswell so happy days :P
hope this helps

Really the way i see it, if your paint is scratched and covered in swirl marks it will need to be mopped/machine buffed.
If you just want to walk into halfords and pick some gear up,
-give it a good wash,
-clay bar it,
-then really a cutting compound, G3/T-cut will suffice, couple of shots at that may be required to get the colour up.
-Polish it ( AutoGlym SRP, or a megs product)
-Seal it with a wax.

Naturally a full detail will pay wonders but also dent your wallet. Wait for Kev mk3 or Nic to pop along.

If your GSi was anywhere near as pink as mine had got, the only way imo is to machine polish it. Polishing it by hand will be very tiring.
i spent 5.5 hours today polishing mine, by my silverline rotary. Using a mix of megs and sonus polishing pads.
Also polish, i tried several options before choosing the menzerna rb3.02. Dodo Juice LP, and a mix of clearkote red moose glaze with vanilla moose glaze just wasnt cutting it for me.
Anyway, heres just a 50:50 pic of what i achieved today and what can be done with vauxhall flame red

dont bother with a machiene polisher if its only going to be a cheap one!

1) wash using the 2 bucket method with megs gold class
2) clay bar!
3) megs stage one polish, megs stage 2 wax, megs stage 3 sealent.
4) dodo juice purple haze wax! <<<< do not miss this stage! you wont believe the shine!

Two bucket method means having two buckets when you wash the car. One has the clean soapy water and the other is just warm water. Use the one with only water to rinse out the cloth which keeps the shampoo water clean and dirt free.

the machine polisher i used is the silverline rotary, which can be bough from www.cleanyourcar.co.uk

however, i have been uisng this machine for over a year now, and i cant stress enough to practice with it first before you hit your car with it, as rotarys are very unforgiving if you dont know what youre doing!

Hi mate,

there has been some cracking advice on here already,

firstly if you want a cheap rottary then that is fine, it will NOT leave hologrammes and swirl marks, this is caused by cheap pads and compunds not the rottary it's self,

have a look at my threads for instance, i use a £50 silverline rotary day in day out,
BUT the backing plate and pads i use probably double it's value

you can get silverlines from many places, ebay is always cheapest, but throw the backing plates and pads that come with it away straight away and get some 3M pads and a 3M backing plate,

again as siad though if you don't know what you are doin you can cause more damage than good, so practice on a couple of scrap panals first,

if you are goin to use a machine or do it by hand then the following products will be good for you,

if you do do it by hand though be preppered to spend a good while on a section at a time when polishing,

wash - dodo juice born to be mild,
clay dodo juice gentle grey
lube you can just mix a little shampoo with water for this,
polish - dodo juice lime prime,
wax dodo juice hard candy or any wax really depends how how much of the budget you want to spend on this bit,

hope that helps a little mate

i see you like dodo juice too Nic!? lol

some good advice there from nic too.

I think if you do want to use a machine, its probably best to avoid a rotary if you just want to get stuck in on your own car. maybe go for the megs dual action polisher. more expensive, but more forgiving for a beginner over a rotary.

where are you based nic?

thanks for the advice ive been looking around trying to get the best deals on stuff at the moment this dodo juice stuff looks like the stuff to have, my budget it tight at the moment as crimbo is around the corner and its bloody freezing out side jan - feb time i should have all the parts - products to crack on,
just a few more questions im looking for a good cheap TFR also shampoo ect to remove most off the dirt / grime & salt build up also on about the silverline polisher what 3m pads will i need and i think my pain is 2pac as it isent matalic ect its vauxhall flame red here's a pic

the 3M pad you should look for is a blue finishing pad that would be a good start, maybe step upto a yellow polishing one,

looks like a good kit and has everything you need to get started.

...except for a practise panel id get from a scrappy lol

ive got a practise ford focus  its our grandads it hasent had a decent wash / polish since he bought it new and that was back in 2002 he hasent even changed the oil or plugs and i can't count how many scratch's its got soo ive got a guinnie pig, also got a r5 to practise on its my mates and he bought it for £90 and its a SHED soo ill have a go on the R5 then the focus then the GSi 3rd time lucky
