ive recently bought my astra mk3 gls 1.6 ecotec been told the timing belt snapped just wanted to know what sort of damage i could be looking at and any help thanks for looking

how much was the car - might be cheaper to get a new engine

could just buy yourself a new engine fora couple of hundred quid if your into doing that, gives you time to clean the new engine up before it goes in :) i did same, my timing belt snaped on my c18xel and ended up bending the valves, bought myself the same engine again for £150 and had it fitted within the next couple of days, gid me chance to cean it and have all new gaskets on etc :)

Just replace the head with a known good one, wont cost a lot or take very long.

Would anyone in the area be able to give us a hand getting the head off as i really want to find out if this engine is repairable if not i will replace it with a 1.8 also i payed £80 for it with mot upto 23rd october and had a new exhaust system no rust on arches been well looked after im located in bedfordshire dunstable thanks for all the help everyone

if you need an engine i know of a good 1.6 16v mk3 sport being broken for spares not that far from you

As the belt is snapped see if the engine turns over by hand, if it does whip plugs out and do a compression test, if compression is ok will tell you a lot more than guesses.
Often if they go at very low speeds all can be ok, engine dependant of course and I don't know this particular engine I must admit.
tabetha

cheapest to put a good head on if you can get hold of one

hi mate if you have the x16xe like mine it should be fine cause if im right that engine was a few of the modles that came with enough clearance for the valves and pistons not to hit if the cam goes... best way is to do a compression test on it , if all is good there then your looking at 1 new timing belt and kit... also i hope your clued up on your astra as the sub frame can be an arse if your changing it your self:lol:
