1995 Astra

Shot Doyley, yes agree with you. You guys missed out on the TS and we (SA) missed out on the GSI (3 door).

So the beginning of last month after driving the Astra I noticed a smallish puddle of radiator fluid under the car. Started looking for the leak and found that one of the “fingers” on the plastic pipe of the cooling system has broken straight off.

Got a few quotes for non- genuine part shops but my last stop was at my local GM dealer. Now normally GM don’t have parts for my Astra as they just say – sorry that part is no longer supported and we not importing – basically giving me the middle finger. But this time it was different when inquiring about the plastic cooling pipe, I couldn’t believe it - they actually had two in stock at their warehouse in Port Elizabeth (about 1050km from me) and they will courier it to Johannesburg within two days. Costing R1018.00 (about 60 pounds).

The pipe arrived Wednesday, collected, fitted and decided to do a full cooling system flush Saturday. Refilled with 2.5L concentrated Anti-Freeze/ summer coolant and water.

So today I participate in an Opel breakfast run to Hartebeespoort dam (about a 200km round trip) and the outside temperature was in the 33 degrees today and the Astra was perfect. The car temperature gauge stayed on quarter (1st line) and when pushing it went up to half (2nd line) and quickly goes back down to quarter when the Astra cooling fans kicked in.

So being Easter weekend and I had some spare time I decided to clean my garage. Found this photo of my father’s 1993 Astra 200IE (20XE). Unfortunately my father totalled it (rolled it) about 100m from our house in 1999

I loved that car, and luckily my father wasn’t too stingy with it - letting me use it often (that was before I bought my Kadett (5door) 200is

Liked the mags wheels as well – can’t remember what the name of the mags was though.

Sorry for the bad picture quality.

Bought a few things for the TS this week. (not installed yet)

GM Shock mounts (ja surprised that GM had stock of the shock mounts), unfortunately GM had no stock of the front control arms so I had to buy Moto Euro control arms.

Had a spare tappet and plug covers sandblasted.

Also had the cav wheels I bought last week sandblasted. Painting them next week.

Love the work going into this

Thx Arnie, Kev and Andy.

Yes Andy, getting GM parts for our MK3's here in SA are getting more and more difficult.

So with the mag being resprayed I also decide to redo the TS center caps as well. Removed the old Opel logo from the center caps and had new ones made (no stock and no longer supported at GM).

The new logos are not perfect but for now they’d have to do.

Now just have to fit them back onto the center caps.

So after almost a year from getting the cruise control unit, I’m only now start looking to “install” it.
Bought a metal plate (200mm x 200mm x 3mm) and started drawing and then cutting.
Made a small mistake of +- 20mm when bending the “plate”, so I will need to do it all over again.
But finished the bracket anyway, not caring to much in properly painting it.

Will redo the bracket this weekend

nicely done

Thx Andy & Kev

So far I only managed to start cutting the new bracket. Going camping this weekend so won’t be doing much work on the bracket.

So yesterday I decided to buy “car ramps” to make it easier to do work on my cars. They work great and while I’m checking underneath my TS I noticed some coolant drops coming from the overflow pipe that from the heater core/radiator. Then checked my passenger side carpet and its wet and a greenish colour is visible. Haven’t checked yet but it’s probably the heater core or the O-rings from the feeding pipes. Will try to check it out this weekend but meanwhile got pricing.

GM have no stock and no longer support the heater core (as expected), and then found a Behr for R 550.00. Will check first.

Yip, so my photobucket account is now also “locked”. Lucky downloaded all my photos to the forum so ill slowly “paste” the pic’s back (hope I can put them all back at the right places)

Anyway. I had my heater core radiator pressure tested and yes it’s f***ed.

As usual GM no longer support this product so I had to order a new one from a local Radiator supplier.

Was also a mission to get new Viton O-ring/ seals for the two pipes that goes into the heater core.

Found a place 130km (round trip) from my house.
