AL's Mk3 Merit XE

Too heavy, absolutely pointless conversion imo. V6's are cool for cruisers, not for drivers ;)

I disagree. With a few mods including a lightened flywheel the V6's are fairly powerful and revvy engines. Maybe a bit heavy but not enough to moan about.

In a stripped out Mk3 I think it would be a decent track weapon.

were you at Billing Al? I thought I saw you from a distance with Chip but I really wasn't sure. Was trying to find you to give you that badge.

he wasnt mate no

OP / Jamie: Each to their own I guess - they are good powerful motors but not to my preference tbh - the XE for me is a really good compromise between power and weight. I def need to sort my suspension ASAP though!

Melv: No mate, stropped up in Yorkshire to run Specky's Tigra at York Raceway. Sounds like a Missed a good weekend!

Right, this is a long ass post of high's and low's and a ****ing lot of pictures - so bear with me!

Quick pic of my engine mount as it was. Paint marked them and have done a few hundred miles of varied driving (and a long trailer journey lol) and they haven't moved. Phew!

July-17-1.jpg

Some more new tyres... Yoko's are ****ing awesome! Can't wait to stick the rears on too and have a proper thrash :)

July-17-2.jpg

Carried on from tyre fitting up to Yorkshire (Dewsbury to be exact) - stuffed the old girl in to a garage with a certain sexual Tigra.

July-17-3.jpg

Then later that evening started pulling my car apart - the man Specky at work.

July-17-4.jpg

Specky's jacking skills scared me. Never had a car that high on a jack  Didn't take long to stick an equal length shaft one though - Speckles even taught me how CV's went together which was nice :D A quick run round the block and a launch in the wet proved that the equal length shafts make a massive difference - should cut down on the uneven wear hopefully!

July-17-5.jpg

Even had time to try on Specky's Micky T's - think they were 'slightly' too big - wing didn't like them much!

July-17-6.jpg

Was happy leaving the cars overnight - the guard dogs were larger than your average cow. Soft as **** though it all fairness :pmsl:

July-17-7.jpg

We all love Boost...just wish I had some!

July-17-8.jpg

Saturday night saw the tables turned - after Specky assisted in fitting my shaft, his fox shat itself so we had a nice late night repair job. F28 out, rebuilt with spare box (had to keep existing casing and swap diff over) then get it all back together - didn't take us long in all fairness!

July-17-9.jpg

LOT of filings when it came apart - we think the selector broke so it jammed between 2nd and 4th.

July-17-10.jpg

Sunday saw the wrinklies come out.

July-17-11.jpg

Some daft old guy appeared too. He wasn't drunk.

July-17-12.jpg

Then later on Sunday, it gave up. 140 miles from home - oh dear! Thought the timing belt had slipped at first (still think it was a tooth out tbh) - got it running again but was rattling its tits off and wouldn't drive as had no compression.

July-17-13.jpg

Got dragged back to a local services...

July-17-14.jpg

...and 5 1/2 hours later an AA contracted wagon turned up. Complaint has been lodged... I was facking fuming at how long it took!

July-17-15.jpg

First suspicion was something on #2 going by plug colour...

July-17-16.jpg

So started stripping the head off on Monday morning!

July-17-17.jpg

Came off with no problems!

July-17-18.jpg

July-17-19.jpg

Hmmm valves look straight - just need a clean up.

July-17-20.jpg

So assumed the scary noises were a bottom end bearing - all pulled out and apart from some wear on the bores - everything was spot on. Clearly had a full rebuild at some point as bearings have very little wear on them.
Only slightly worrying thing was that all but one of the sump bolts was finger tight!
Found a small piece of metal in the sump - couldn't figure out where it had come from.

July-17-21.jpg

Stripped the head down to an extent...

July-17-22.jpg

Then tonight started on the rest.

July-17-23.jpg

Got all the way to the last exhaust valve (#4, far right) and thought I wasn't going to find anything wrong.

July-17-24.jpg

But wait!

July-17-25.jpg

That'll be the little ******* then! Matched it to the piece i'd recovered from the sump - still a bit missing though so need to blow the oil ways through and check in the filter.

July-17-26.jpg

So basically it was one of the spring seats that had snapped (Specky was first and only person to guess that iirc from from terrible original pictures ). Already emailed one of our parts guys to track me some down - its part number 90285797 (early engine) if anyone is interested :p
Earlier today I ordered everything else that I need from Autovaux (cambelt, sump gasket with baffle, rod bolts, head bolts and head gasket set). Hopefully i'll have everything by Saturday morning - going to get a new sump from GAZ'D on Saturday as mine is cracked to **** then can start sticking it together properly - my aim is to have it running on Sunday so that I can get some miles on it before TOTB.

Its going to be a loooooooooooooooooong weekend I think!

Gutted fella, we seem to be seeing quite a few mk3's on the back of recovery trucks lately  thats not a good thing though!
Hope the rebuild goes well mate.

on another note, excellent tyre choice, i ran those on my old wheels on the astra and they were fecking awesome!

Aye they are really good! Loads of people said to me they'll wear quick but they did better than my Goodyears at the weekend even after loads of launches at York raceway!

I usually tend to find that the people who says that havnt used the parada's lol. Its all crap, mine were on the atsra for about a year and had loads of tread left, and its not asthough i didnt abuse the life out of the astra on a regular basis, as thats what it was built for.
Everyone says they are pants in the wet aswell but i found once you get some heat into them they arnt too bad in wet conditions.

Today's update! Excuse the quality of the pics, the lense on my phone is a bit dirty thanks to all the greasy fingerprint picture taking

First off today I picked up my parcel from ANC (Fedex)... £130 in the pockets of Autovaux  All good quality stuff though - sump gasket/baffle is genuine GM, as were rod bolts! First time i've dealt with them and am VERY impressed with the service!

July-19-1.jpg

Then 'popped' over to Cambridge to visit our chief drunk (GAZ'D) and pick up a new sump as mine as cracked to ****. Had a v.nice cup of coffee then went to the garage and was nearly raped by the dog. :pmsl: The previous XE to wear this sump clearly had a bit of a head gasket problem! :o

July-19-2.jpg

Cleaned up really well though and is in much better condition than my old one.

July-19-3.jpg

Then went about chucking the pistons back in, torque'd everything up with new bolts etc...

July-19-5.jpg

Cleaned up all of the sump bolts holes then stuck it all together with a bit of hylomar on the rubber gasket. Hoping that the 8v/ecotec item will stop the leaking - at least for a while!

July-19-4.jpg

Sump in place...looking a little bit too bufty at present - should have matt-blacked it

July-19-6.jpg

And a final shot showing the pistons back in place.

July-19-7.jpg

Going to get the new spring seat cups in the morning then can build the head back up. My aim is to have it running tomorrow but i'm not going to rush - if its not done i'll just call in sick on Monday

least its coming on Al :)

lol cheers Nas...work are going to be disappointed tomorrow!

Sunday's progress then... had to go and pick up the spring seat cups from the garage this morning, then get a few other bits (valve grinding stick & paste) before I could start work.
Spent basically the whole afternoon assembling the head - collets were typically fiddly as **** but its all gone together fine.

Cleaned the head out first of all, removed all old sealant etc then got the de-greaser out.

July-20-1.jpg

July-20-2.jpg

Then started lapping the valves back in - only a light going over to clean up the seats :)

July-20-3.jpg

Still took quite a while! Pesky 16 valve engines

July-20-4.jpg

Stuck all the springs and colletts in - fiddly work but extremely satisfying once done.

July-20-5.jpg

Gave the lifters a quick soak before re-fitting.

July-20-6.jpg

Everything in place before the lifters/cams go in...

July-20-7.jpg

Cams in...

July-20-8.jpg

Inlet on...

July-20-9.jpg

Swapped to my spare dizzy (left) as the old one was a bit ****ed. Location pin had broken away!

July-20-10.jpg

New dizzy features a black cap...looks great :love2:

July-20-11.jpg

Couldn't get bottom pulley bolt undone and didn't want to stick head on until it was off. Calling in to work tomorrow so that I can get it finished :pmsl:

Last edited:
good work Al least your getting stuck in as i wouldnt know where to begin

Some progress for today...

Nice new head gasket in place...

July-21-1.jpg

Head in place...

July-21-4.jpg

Then whilst tightening one of the unions...I went a bit fat :(

July-21-2.jpg

Thankfully though I had a spare rail that i'd bought ages ago - 3bar reg on this one so hopefully it'll get the ******* thing flaming like it used to

July-21-4.jpg

In place...

July-21-5.jpg

Stuck the rocker cover on :)

July-21-6.jpg

Then decided to give it a quick bath as the front end was covered in oily handprints. That and I didn't have the tool to undo the 6 bolts on the aux pulley!

July-21-7.jpg

Carried on and started fitting some of the smaller bits - strut brace went on easy this time :)

July-21-8.jpg

Moved my 'catch tank' to a new spot too - quite like where it is now :) Need to swap the bottle for something humorous like a Slim Fast can though

July-21-9.jpg

My old man borrowed the weird torx-ish bit for the bottom pulley bolts - even after ****ting them all with a hammer and chisel, two refused to un-do and have rounded off. Shown by the red marks...

July-21-10.jpg

So Dad is bringing home an 'easy out' tomorrow which will hopefully get those two bolts out and I can stick the new belt on then. (already got some new 'proper' bolts to replace the current ones)

List of things to do:

Remove bottom pulley + replace bolts.
Fit timing belt.
Fluids.
Join manifold to rest of exhaust (have new bolts and springs to fit).
Fit inlet (filter, afm etc).
Fire it up and hope it works!

Right, unfortunately no real progress tonight. The chap at my old man's place that I borrow all of the 'specialist' tools off wasn't in toay so I couldn't get his 'easy out' - have ordered some from a local supplier so will hopefully be able to have a crack at those bolts tomorrow!
So in the meantime I went over the car and knocked off most of the small bits and bobs that needed doing! So...

Exhaust is all bolted together (used the proper springs with some bolts this time so hopefully it won't start blowing within a week this time! Plugged in the last few sensors (ICV etc) vthat I couldn't reach properly without getting at them from underneath.

After that I finally got around to having a look at my front bumper - as you can see there isn't much airflow getting at the radiator - the small gap available is partially blocked by the number plate :frown:

July-22-1.jpg

Closer inspection revealed that a large section is just clipped in to place! Had I relaised that before it would have been long gone in the past

July-22-2.jpg

Now thats a bit better!

July-22-3.jpg

But not good enough, so I carried on cutting!

July-22-4.jpg

Haggard as **** but will do the job I wanted! Leaves a nice big space to put a proper cold air feed too so I can put my headlamp back in

July-22-5.jpg

How it looks with the rad in place...

July-22-6.jpg

Bay looking a little more 'finished' with the rad in place (ignore the temporary plug cover).

July-22-7.jpg

Shame this end isn't quite look finished :( All because of 2 ****y bolts! Grrrr

July-22-8.jpg

So then I got bored and started messing about with stuff. Was going to do the usual Red Bull can over the coil trick but gave it a quick coat of Hammerite silver instead - did the bracket satin black...

July-22-9.jpg

Looks a bit tidier now! Love doing little bits like this from time to time - its the small details that add up to one big package. (admittedly a ****nig **** one...but still )

July-22-10.jpg

Final to do list:

Remove bottom pulley.
Fit new cambelt.
Oil & Filter.
Turn over to see if its ok...
Stick the plugs in and hope!

Think its gonna be quite tight for the weekend!
