Andy's Saab Turbo Sport

Thats 40psi at the regulator water trap on the wall, so will be less at the gun, not sure how much less though!
Depending on length of airline your probably losing around 5psi,so your probably on the high side, especially for basecoat. I always run air regulator on my gun so I can set the pressure accurately. If you look into a gun regulator I can recommend the ANI one, its only £15.

yea you could be right, looking at all the videos i watched i set mine to the same they had theirs! Must be around about right cause it came out well without too much floating around in the air

Did some more painting last night, 2k satin black.. stuff turned out well :)

Gearbox -

This is how the interior looks now, I've started getting that back together. Hopefully get the dash back in soon as I'm sick of the bloody thing being in the house

Tonight I fitted some of the parts I have painted.

Defo pleased with how they turned out!

looks great so far

Quick picture dump update!

Got my engine back from machine shop, head skimmed, pressure tested etc, block deck skimmed, bores honed..

I was hoping they were going to properly clean it, but it was apparent when I picked it up that was not the case lol. So I took it to a place to be acid dipped :)

A hugeeee improvement! And saved a LOT of effort cleaning it lol.

Tonight started on the rebuild. New main bearings in place.

Crank in.

Piston rings fitted and big end bearings fitted. Left my piston ring compressor at work though so couldn't fit them tonight.

Also built up most of the inlet manifold

And finally my new oil cooler has arrived which came with the pipes I needed for my modified oil filter housing, which has AN10 fittings welded onto it

That's it for now.. but going to keep the progress up as much as I can the next few weeks!

looking "fresh"..... err, i mean nice lol :)

I actually get what your doing now after doing it to the swift

I was thinking about you while fitting them actually haha! Much easier on an engine stand than on your back under it getting oil dripped on you tho lol.
Agreed that oil got everywhere and then the gasket sealer was in my ears ffs  shame it was for no use and its being pulled out

coming together well now

arch man those piston ring compressors are the worst bit of kit ever lol. well dont for having no issues. its gonna be a squeeze for vboa but u got this mate!

They're ******* horrendous mate, doesn't help that I broke a ring doing my 1.6 build so it makes me extra nervous now!

Been doing some wiring and it's slowly starting to come together :)

Are they new rings? Usually ok with new ones but I've snapped a few when removing (bikes mainly), also snapped one ring of my Wossner replacements (used old ones just re-sized them coz I'm going to melt them again anyway ).

Ok so long overdue an update, it was definitely a busy month before VBOA lol. So just a dump of pics I took, hopefully near enough in order! There's tons of details missed out here.. I spent a good month working on it every night until 10pm after a day at work, plus weekends. It just about killed me!

Brake fluid and antifreeze of choice arrived.

Battery in the boot, power hooked up.

We have some power :)

Started off with the steering rack and brake servo etc..

Finished off wiring for front end.

New headlight bulbs.

Tested and working nicely :)

Cylinder head all built up.

Did some painting!

Front suspension built up, reusing my old Spax adjustable suspension, with new adjustable top mounts and GM top mount bearings.

Suspension legs fitted.

New Hella radiator and Spal 12" fan.

Oil pump filled with vaseline to help it prime.

Block ready for the head.

Head and timing covers on.

Bolting up more stuff to the engine.

Spec paddle clutch.

Engine out of the shed into daylight and mated up to the gearbox.

Engine in!

Manifold and new turbo fitted.

Radiator, intercooler and oil cooler in place.

Getting everything plumbed in.

Front end all on and pretty much finished.

At which point, everything was wired up, fluids all in, engine oil in and ready to prime. So went to turn the key with spark plugs out to prime the oil, the engine turned over slowly then ground to a complete halt. It was stuck solid. I knew the engine turned over perfectly before it went in the car, I turned it over after fitting each piston and after timing it up, I knew it turned over beautifully. I pulled the timing chain off to make sure the cams were free, which they were. But the crank was solid. I decided to pull the sump off thinking I may have to pull off some bearing caps. So got the sump off, and found the problem.

The flywheel bolts, about 1-2mm too long, and hard up against the main bearing cap :doh::doh::doh:

The story behind the bolts is I had lost or thrown away my old ones, but I couldn't find new ones for love nor money in time (about a week before VBOA at this point!). So I bought some bolts from the size of the originals. But the ones I bought had a tapered end, where the originals had a flat end.

You can see where they rubbed.

So this meant the gearbox has to come back out, and this was on the DAY BEFORE VBOA  I was about ready to throw the towel in and give up. But somehow I managed to crack on with it.

Subframe back off, box back out.

Modified the bolts with the bench grinder, put it all back together, the engine turns over, woooo! Got everything back together on the Thursday, and ready to start once again that afternoon. Cranked it over, oil pressure light went out in a few seconds, happy days! So spark plugs in, coil pack on, and turn the key.. it cranks.. but no fire.. F**K SAKE

After about an hour of checking wiring found a missing fuse, which gave me spark, but still no fire. After a lot of head scratching I found the problem, massive schoolboy error.........camshafts in back to front :doh::doh::rolleyes:

In my defense, they were probably fitted on a late night when I was exhausted lol. Luckily the camshafts are an easy swap in these engines, just drop the chain off and a handful of bolts. So got them swapped and it fired right up, thank god

By this point it was Thursday night, VBOA was the next day, the car's done 0 miles, I'd not packed, still needed an MOT and the interior putting back together!

Friday morning the interior got done, was all the dash trims etc to put back in.

Once that was done, I had the small issue of the state of the car, it had sat outside for the best part of 2 years! I washed it and went over it with the DA and some polish just to make it look a little more presentable, but it was far from perfect, but not a massive priority either.

I got to work at about 1pm for the MOT, the first drive actually went very well, no issues at all apart from the speedo not working, which later turned out to be my pulse converter had died. Got back home, threw everything into the car, downloaded a GPS speedo app and we were off to VBOA!

And it made it...

I think I was about ready to cry with relief it was done and I was there  Got there about 7pm, still had to put the tent up and build and light the bbq with absolutely no energy. But the VBOA weekend was bloody awesome!!

Since VBOA, been putting some miles on it, done the 250 miles running in, now on the proper oil and running full boost, it goes very well indeed!

Replaced my old pulse converter for the speedo with this, which is cool, records your top speed too lol.

Other than that, a few niggles but nothing much at all. It's driving very well! I think that's the majority of things caught up on in here now lol :)
