also any ideas why my car would have a roof mounted ariel and an electrical one in the rear quarter ?? and how can you tell the different between phase 1 headlights and phase 2

phase 1 headlights are a diff shape to match the phase 1 grill and the gsi grill where as the phase 2 lights are shaped to go with the v shape grill think the phase 2 are a bit wider

From what I can gather mate, the Phase 2 headlights have a different angle along the inside to meet the Phase 2 grill. Could be wrong though.

I have a 1996 MK3 1.4LS 8v..your guide tells me that I own a phase 2!!! cheers.

Can tell that by the fact it's a 1996, they changed 94/95
